District 9
MOVIE TITLE: District 9
DIRECTOR: Neill Blomkamp
YEAR: 2009
GENRE: Science Fiction
RATING: R for violence, language, and politics
GRADE: Pass
In Apartheid-ruled South
Africa , an alien ship containing “prawn” refugees hovers
over Johannesburg
while the occupants are housed in a ghetto called District 9. Now the
government wants to evict these aliens from their homes and move them into
worse housing. They do that with the help of sadistic mercenaries led by
arrogant bureaucrat Wikus van der Merwe, who during this operation becomes
contaminated with alien jet fuel and slowly turns into a prawn himself. Now
Wikus is a fugitive on the run as he tries to keep from being experimented on
by government scientists.
Xenophobia has always been poisonous to our world politics
and that is fully on display in this movie. Just like any other oppressed
minority, the prawns are treated as second class citizens and social pariahs
simply because they don’t look or talk like typical humans. One could argue
that the aliens are treated worse than human minorities, but just remember that
it could be any group of people in that situation. Hitler treated Jewish people
like they were monsters. Donald Trump treats Hispanic immigrants like
“animals”. The less humanity you have, the more likely you are to distrust and
commit atrocities against those different from you. It’s a bully mentality that
is taught, not something you’re born with. Altruistic love is for all
creatures, not just the ones who look the best. The anti-xenophobia message is
loud and clear in this movie. I hope everybody is listening.
And it’s because of the lack of humanity from the people in
charge that I find it difficult to sympathize with Wikus as he goes through his
transformation. He’s every bit as smug and bigoted as his mercenary companions
and I have a hard time believing that his attitude changed much throughout the
movie. He only seems to be sympathetic towards the prawns when he needs their
help. I understand that he has to be a jerk in order for his character
development to be realistic, but then I ask, what character development? He
seems to feel sorrier for himself than he does anybody else. Perhaps this was
all by design since the anti-xenophobia message needs the be clearly sent, but
it’s still a slap in the face to know that Wikus is our story’s main hero. He
doesn’t seem very heroic to me.
But now that the movie’s message is there for all to see,
there’s no reason why we can’t have some good old fashioned violent action. And
boy, does this movie have plenty of it. The machineguns and tanks are deadly
enough, but then you add alien weapons to the mix and bodies explode like blood
balloons. Granted, these extraterrestrial weapons can only function on prawn
DNA, but that’s the silver lining in Wikus’s mutation. Whether you like him or
not, you have to admit that he’s deadly with one of these laser guns despite
having zero combat training. When he uses these weapons on the bad guys and not
on the aliens, that’s pretty much the only way you as an audience can warm up
to him. It’s superficial at best, but if you thought an Apartheid-themed movie
was going to be lacking in the violence department, you’re sadly mistaken. At
least the violence is fun to watch at times.
Anybody who says District 9 is a modern day classic isn’t
kidding around. It’s a movie we need now more than ever in today’s political
climate. Racism didn’t go away; it’s just being filmed. While District 9 is a
science fiction movie, it feels too much like real life. A passing grade will
go to this masterful piece of cinema. Every Academy Award this movie won was
highly deserved and much more. If you saw this movie in theaters or you bought
the DVD, consider your money well-spent.

Apartheid
VERSE 1
Nation of segregation!
Burning crosses, immolation
Vision of division!
Survival by your permission
Dark times of apartheid!
Bend over and open wide
Silence and violence!
Ruled by one-percent tyrants
CHORUS
Splitting the people apart
Is where the slaughter starts
Watching fires from afar
Apartheid lowering the bar
VERSE 2
Empire of gunfire!
Bodies stacked like a spire
Kingdom of war drums!
Isn’t this a lot of fucking fun?
Debunk the splatter-punk!
That sailing ship has sunk
Rebellion is for hellions!
Degenerate into skeletons
EXTENDED CHORUS 1
Splitting the people apart
Is where the slaughter starts
Watching fires from afar
Apartheid lowering the bar
This is the new normal
This is the new cordial
This is the new order
These are the new borders
VERSE 3
World peace, make this cease!
We’re more than skin and beliefs
Weapons and heaven!
Mutually exclusive times seventy-seven
Nation of education!
No more racist occupation
Arm in arm, do no harm!
Peaceful protests near and afar
EXTENDED CHORUS 2
Splitting the people apart
Is where the slaughter starts
Watching fires from afar
Apartheid lowering the bar
This will soon be history
Mark the end of misery
It ain’t a fucking mystery
Come together in synergy

We Own the Night
***WE OWN THE NIGHT***
Zombie brain happens to everybody no matter how good they
are at hiding it. Sometimes your brain is so exhausted that you don’t feel like
doing shit that day. You’ve overworked yourself the previous day, you’re
stressed out, you didn’t sleep well, whatever the case may be, you’re not
immune. It’s especially frustrating when you’re scrolling for memes on Face
Book and see one that says, “You should be writing!” Yes, I understand that
it’s meant to be motivating, but sometimes it can feel like a slap in the face
to someone having a zombie brain day.
The operative word in that last sentence is “day”. You can
go through the whole day snoozing and lazing about, but when the stars and moon
light up the night sky, you own that motherfucker. You’ve gotten nothing done
during the daytime, but it’s not too late to get shit done in the darkest hours
of the night. All you need to tell yourself is…”We own the night!” Whether
you’re getting shit done at 10:30, midnight, or 3:00 in the morning, you’re
telling your zombie brain to go fuck itself and you’re defying the odds. And
then when you wake up the next day, you can do it with a smile knowing the
previous night’s darkness brought out the beast within you. You’re an artistic
werewolf. You’re a vampire thirsting for the blood of your characters. And it
feels soooooo fucking good!
Sometimes when I’m lying awake at night, lyrics for a song
idea will come to me. And then the clock strikes two in the morning and I
disconnect my oxygen mask to go write those lyrics down. That same night, those
lyrics are live on my social media account and I go to bed a happy man. It’s
better to lose a few hours of sleep if it means you’ll remember how your story
or poem is going to be written. When you wake up in the morning, it could all
disappear and the world will never know.
I tell you this personal story not to brag, but to let my
audience know that owning the night can be done. If Donald Dumbass can tweet
insensitive shit at three in the fucking morning, you can write something
better around the same time at night. If you’ve spent the whole day being
mentally fried, your energy could potentially come back to you by the time
darkness falls. Everybody else in the house is snoozing soundly, so you have no
distractions. It’s just you and your limitless imagination. And once you’ve
finished, you can drift off into cloudland and have weird ass dreams about
being naked in high school…or is that just me?
I hope I don’t sound too much like those Face Book memes
that shame people for not writing. If you must tuck yourself in after a long
day of zombie brain, you most certainly can do that. If you don’t own the
night, you can certainly own the next day. And the day after that. And the day
after that. And so on and so forth. But there will be some days where you don’t
feel like doing a goddamn thing, and that’s okay, because we’re all human
beings. Zombie brain is a universal problem no matter how much people brag
about being hard workers. Sometimes zombie brain is your mind and body’s way of
telling you to slow the fuck down. Even Vin Diesel in the Fast & Furious
movies has to know when to slow his driving down. Why do you think there are so
goddamn many of those movies to begin with?
Do you own the night or are you a daywalker? Does your
current schedule allow you the kind of creativity you want to produce? Always
make time for what you dream of doing…even if that time is seven minutes past
Zombie O’clock. We’ve got ears, say cheers!
***POISON TONGUE TALES 2 & DARK FANTASY WARRIORS***
I’m sure you’ve all noticed that I have drawings on my
social media accounts of Ronan Crow and Kain Venomtongue. That’s because those
two are a major part of my next Poison Tongue Tales 2 story. It’s called “Dark
Marriage” and it goes like this:
CHARACTERS:
- Kain Venomtongue, Elf Warlock
- Ronan Crow, Bird Swordsman
- Sheryl Sweet, Human Bride
- Nameless Snake Minions
PROMPT CONFORMITY: To be announced.
SYNOPSIS: Kain is at the top of his ziggurat getting ready
to forcibly marry Sheryl through a necromantic ritual. The Dark Marriage will
give Kain authoritative and magical powers since Sheryl is the daughter of a
powerful wizard king. Sheryl is bound to a crucifix with a ball gag in her
mouth while the snake minions line up on either side of the ziggurat’s stairs.
Ronan has been charged with the task of rescuing Sheryl before the ritual is
allowed to take place. He has little time to complete his mission and a small
army of opponents to battle through.
EXTRA NOTE: Sheryl Sweet is next on the chopping block for
the Dark Fantasy Warriors series. I’ve been debating with myself if I want to
draw her while she’s strapped to the crucifix. Imagine the kind of reference
picture I’d have to search for on Google to get that effect. It would be…weird
to say the least. Hehe!
***BORN A CRIME***
I’m sure you guys have also seen reviews on my social media
accounts of Kick-Ass 3 and Fang and Claw, two badass books that have earned
passing grades. I expect my next reading adventure, Born a Crime by Trevor
Noah, to be enjoyable as well. How can you go wrong with Trevor Noah? He’s the
host of the Daily Show for a reason: because he’s funny and eye-opening at the
same time. Born a Crime is a memoir detailing his childhood in apartheid-era South Africa .
The book was originally a Mother’s Day present for my mom and she loved it to
pieces. Now she’s given it back to me so that I can have the same educational
experience as she did.

"Careless Whisper" by Seether
I would have never known this song existed if it hadn’t been for Wham’s original version from the 1980’s. But exist it does. There indeed is a hard rock version of “Careless Whisper” and it’s done by Seether. No, Shaun Morgan doesn’t scream his head off like most of the singers in my Windows Media Player do. In fact, Shaun Morgan sounds very pleasant. He reminds me of somebody I used to know from the early 1990’s who put out the albums Never Mind and In Utero. What’s that guy’s name again? It’s on the tip of my tongue. Hint, hint, wink, wink.
So why exactly would I pay tribute to Seether for doing a cover version of a song originated by a pop duo named Wham? Because Seether’s version is not only more energetic and depressing, but it was there for me when I walked out of the Grand Cinema in Tacoma after watching the movie “Obsoledia“. When I got in the car with my mom and step-dad Dale, it was the first song I listened to on my MP3 player. George will never dance with Sophie again, not like they did when they were out in Death Valley speculating the fate of the earth post-climate change.
“Careless Whisper” and “Obsoledia” are both mediums that will rip your heart to pieces. By the end of both of them, the beautiful relationships are over. It’s true that “Careless Whisper” wasn’t sung by Shaun Morgan with Amy Lee from Evanescence in mind. The two of them used to date and they don’t anymore. Judging from the fact the two of them wrote breakup songs about each other, the separation was pretty fucking brutal.
There was nothing ugly about the way “Obsoledia” ended. George was a lonely librarian who didn’t believe in love until he spent a weekend with Sophie. Just when this poor introvert was starting to believe in the power or romance, it was used to break his heart when it turned out Sophie already had a boyfriend. Obsoledia is about things that are obsolete in this world, so maybe Seether’s new and fresh version of “Careless Whisper” wouldn’t have fit with the movie’s theme. If it were any other canon, though, it would have worked to perfection.
Shaun Morgan and George were both people with broken hearts. I made this connection the night I saw Obsoledia and subsequently listened to “Careless Whisper” by Seether. In my short stories and novels, the power of love is a deity in and of itself. It’s worshiped to the fullest extent and executed with beauty. Characters fall in love with each other all the time, sometimes in the most inopportune times. “Not Gonna Die” and “If I Offer You My Soul”, anyone?
I can get away with that in literature, because a good story is better than a cold reality. In the real world, people get divorced and broken up all the time. When those breakups and divorces happen, they often involve a power struggle that may or may not involve violence or monetary possessiveness. We all want to believe in the power of love. But is it really there? Can it last a lifetime? Can it endure so many hardships that it becomes indestructible? The answers vary from person to person. But as long as Seether is singing “Careless Whisper” on my MP3 player, the jury will always be out on this one.

"Country Song" by Seether
From childhood to my early teens, I played with toys and exercised my imagination so that one day I could use it to make my dreams come true as an adult. Now that I’m an adult and have four e-books to my name, I continually look for tributes to my childhood either on the internet, in movies, or in books. I recently saw The Lego Movie and my nostalgia needs were on orgasmic overdrive.
Long before that movie came out, I saw the music video for “Country Song” by Seether, which front man Shaun Morgan once called “Toy Story on crack”. He wasn’t kidding. The video shows a kid playing with action figures on the beach and whatever he’s doing to the toys happens in the world that Shaun Morgan and his band mates inhabit.
The band members are cowboys in the wild west (as the title “Country Song” would suggest) and the other toys are the villains of the story. You’ve got a Mexican luchador, a teddy bear, a space man, all of which occupy a wild west story, by the way.
But that’s the great thing about having a budding imagination: rules don’t matter. If Shaun Morgan wants to shoot an imaginary chain gun at the other “characters” in the music video, so be it. If a big fuzzy teddy bear wants to stir up trouble in an anachronistic nightmare, let him do it. And if the kid’s little sister wants to bring her Barbies along, they can stand by Shaun’s side like the smoking hot cheerleaders they are.
When you’re a kid playing with your toys, any object can be whatever you make it. If I was eight years old and saw a lead pipe lying on the ground, I’d probably interpret it in my play world as a big ass flame cannon. If I had a human-sized stuffed panda on my bed, he’d be one hard ass motherfucker for a Lego man to kill. If I saw a rubber stamp from the library lying on the ground, I’d probably use it to flatten my action figures into pancakes (in my imagination, of course).
I was born in 1985, which means I’m physically a grownup now. Emotionally? Far from it. While I prefer to play with characters in my stories instead of action figures, I’m still the same kiddy-pie I was in the 80’s and 90’s. A boy has the right to dream, but a man has the means to make those dreams come true.
Did I mention that I have four e-books to my name? Go to Smash Words and search for Garrison Kelly if you’re interested. Go to You Tube to watch the music video for “Country Song” by Seether as well. Seether is a hard band not to love, but in case you don’t, at least you can have a nostalgia boner when watching the music video.
