Muse of the Year 2019
***MUSE OF THE YEAR 2019***
Last summer I wrote a blog entry about how every year I have
a new muse to inspire my creative work. Why every year? Who knows? This muse is
always female and can be a pro-wrestler, actress, singer, or even a fictional
character. My one rule for choosing muses is not to use people I know in real
life (at least by internet standards). If these people knew I was crushing on
them for creativity, I’d probably get sued or slapped with a restraining order.
Pretty extreme reaction, but it’s the likeliest of scenarios. Celebrities or
fictional characters only. Fictional characters don’t give two shits if you’re
crushing on them. And celebrities? Chances are they don’t even know who the
fuck I am. You think 2013’s Muse of the Year Ronda Rousey is just randomly
perusing my Deviant Art account or blog to see what I think of her? Bullshit,
she ain’t going anywhere near my social media. She’s got a lot on her mind,
like trying to figure out a way to get a rematch with Becky Lynch after the botched
ending to their triple threat match at Wrestlemania.
Last year’s muse was of course Sarah-Jane Redmond, the woman
who played Lucy Butler in the 1990’s TV show Millennium. I’m sure Sarah-Jane is
a wonderful human being in real life, but her character Lucy haunted my
creative daydreams for the whole fucking year in 2018. If not for her, first
draft novels like Silent Warrior, Beautiful Monster, and Incelbordination
wouldn’t have seen the light of day. Obsessing over seduction will do that to a
creative soul. Considering I’m in the process of rewriting Beautiful Monster
from the ground up, I’d say Ms. Redmond was a pretty effective muse.
And now that 2018 is in the rear-view mirror, who’s going to
be my muse for 2019? Well, this particular woman has been active in burlesque
performances since the early 90’s, so that’s a plus. A burlesque dancer being
an effective muse? Who would’ve thunk it? In terms of physical appearances and
sexual appetite, this woman shares some similarities with Lucy Butler. In terms
of alignment, however, they could not be more different. Instead of seducing
young men into becoming mediocre versions of themselves, this muse brings the
best out of every man she meets. She exudes class, calmness, and positivity. She’s
more than a pretty face. She lives her sexy gimmick in her everyday life. She
even joked about bathing in her lingerie. She’d totally do that. Without
further ado, let me introduce you all to Garrison Kelly’s 2019 Muse of the
Year: Dita Von Teese.
For some this is a controversial decision on my part. I
accept that. I’ve heard the stories about her relationship with Marilyn Manson.
I’ve heard stories about alleged arrogance. I’ve even heard something about her
being proud of having her image painted on a drone bomb. I don’t know the
intricate details of those stories and quite frankly I’m not going to try and
find out. The Dita Von Teese I know and love is calm in the face of sleazy
interview questions. She exits her relationships without lusting after her ex’s
money or possessions. Just watching her give interviews on You Tube makes me
want to up my creative game. Yes, her negative stories could be true, but
before I even have the chance to find out, I’m going to enjoy her image for what
it is: classic beauty that never goes out of style.
And as long as we’re talking about blog entries from
yesteryear, I’m sure most of you remember one I’ve posted about fan fiction
group therapy, where fictional characters talk about their feelings while
rocking out to heavy metal and eating high calorie foods. Well, I thought it’d
be a crazy, yet good idea to have sex therapy as part of this healing process.
Whether this fictional character needs a cuddle session, a back massage, or
something more, I’m sure it’ll serve a greater purpose beyond me fantasizing
about weird shit. Guess who will be the chief sex therapist at Crystal Mountain , as I’ve called the mental
health center? You guessed it: Dita Von Teese. Except her character won’t be
called that. Her character will named after a little known Pink Floyd song from
the early 70’s. No, it’s not Arnold Layne, you dumb shits! It’s Julia Dream!
Mmmmmm, Julia Dream. Dreamboat queen. Queen of all my dreams. She’d make an
awesome sex therapist.
So what kinds of works could she inspire with her positive
and loving aura? What kinds of stories could I write that would exude
happiness, lightheartedness, or at the very least psychological recovery? Well,
I’m not so sure using Dita Von Teese as inspiration would have been appropriate
for this, but Emilio and the Scratching Post is one such positive story. I plan
on submitting it to an anthology called Tales of the Siblings Not-So-Grim. That
title alone should be enough to clue you in on how lighthearted these stories
are. And of course, it doesn’t get more lighthearted than a cuddly old man
kitty looking for permanent love.
But until I get that story cleaned up spic and span, there’s
no reason why Dita Von Teese can’t be the inspiration for continuing the new
version of Beautiful Monster. I can’t picture her being in the same shadow as
Shelly Atwood, though. Shelly seduces men (and women) to their own doom, Dita
seduces them to greatness. She could be in the same shadow as either Tarja
Rikkinen or Llewellyn Xavier. Well, more likely Tarja because Llewellyn is Windham ’s sister and it’d
be weird if the elf queen tried to seduce her own brother. This ain’t Game of
Thrones, motherfucker. It also ain’t Preacher.
I’ve wondered since last year who 2019’s Muse of the Year
would be and now I have my answer: a burlesque dancer who’s more than just good
looks. She turns beauty and nostalgia into an art form. And yes, she inspires
me to do better in my creative work. It’s almost like I’m trying to impress
Dita despite the fact that she’ll never find me online. Hmm….Anyways, I’m
Garrison Kelly! Even when you feel like dying, keep climbing Crystal Mountain !
And while you’re at it, chug some Crystal Mountain Dew and find your serotonin
levels!
***LYRICS OF THE DAY***
“I change my clothes ten times before I take you on a date.
I’m in a cold sweat, I panic, and it makes me late. I know you never asked for
this. I know my shots will always miss. Does everyone stare this way at you? I
only look this way at you. I change my clothes ten times before I take you on a
date. I get the heebie-jeebies and my panic makes me late. I break into a cold
sweat reaching for the phone. I let it ring twice before I chicken out and
decide you’re not at home. Does everyone stare this way at you? I only look
this way at you. I never noticed the size of my feet until I kicked you in the
shins. Will you ever forgive me for the shape I’m in? Does everyone stare this
way at you? I only look this way at you. I want to write you a sonnet, but I
don’t know where to start. I’m so used to laughing at the things in my heart.
Last of all, I’m sorry, ‘cause you never asked for this. I can see I’m not your
type and my shots will always miss. Does everyone stare this way at you? I only
look this way at you.”

No Filter
***NO FILTER***
You wouldn’t know this from some of the politically liberal
short stories and poems I post on a regular basis…but I fucking hate debating.
I told you all before about the woes of my opponent having more talking points
than me. I might have even mentioned something about scrambling for an answer
and getting nothing. But here’s something you probably didn’t know about me
until now: I have no filter for the bullshit that enters my mind. It could be
an autistic thing. It could be a schizophrenic thing. Maybe I’m just really
fucking sensitive. But whenever an opposing talking point enters my mind, the
most important organ in my body doesn’t seem to want to do its job of filtering
out the horseshit. It stays with me just like any other stimulus, because my
mind takes in everything all at once and doesn’t quiet the fuck down for just
one minute.
It’s because of this that I purposefully go out of my way to
avoid watching conservative or religious videos on You Tube. I also skip over
conservative memes on Face Book by averting my eyes and scrolling down as fast
as I can. I’m sure you’ve seen some of the titles of the You Tube videos by
now:
“Ben Shapiro DESTROYS transgender teenager with just one
Tweet!”
“Ronda Rousey SHUTS DOWN feminist in just one minute!”
“Jordan Peterson DESTROYS this and that! He DESTROYS Mickey
Mouse! He DESTROYS Hulk Hogan! He DESTROYS EVERYTHING!”
You’d think with all of this destruction going on that
there’d be more settled debates in this world. Nope. They just keep talking…and
talking…and talking…and talking. They keep talking because they have stronger
filters than I do. Me? I have to constantly be on my toes when it comes to
brainwashing and loss of individuality, so I scroll by the DESTROY videos as
quickly as possible.
“But, Garrison! You have to challenge yourself! You can’t
live in an echo chamber!”
For all intents and purposes, both of those phrases are
correct. However, when you consider the source of that compound quote, you
begin to realize that whoever said it probably lives in an echo chamber of his
own. Open-mindedness is supposed to be a two way street. If I have to be open
to the other side’s ideas, they have to be open to mine too. But being
open-minded doesn’t mean agreeing with everything the other side says with
one-hundred percent submission. Open-mindedness simply means giving the debater
a chance. What he does with that chance is beyond your control, but if he blows
his chance, that’s it.
I’ve given a thousand chances to a thousand debaters. Any
stubbornness I showed towards them had to be worked for, because my filter for
BS is weak as shit. Some talking points are easier to resist than others, but
the lazy-ass filter is the common denominator. It’s amazing that I didn’t
become a cultist right away. Actually, I probably would have resisted joining a
cult, but I wouldn’t have the debating skills or quick answers necessary to
strike down their talking points. That’s the thing with debates: if you don’t
answer in, let’s say, five seconds or less, you automatically lose. You don’t
get to think about it. You don’t get to mull it over and come back with a
completed homework assignment. It’s now or never.
If you’re reading this and you think I’m ripe for the
picking for your zealous cause, do me a favor: don’t even try. Just give up.
Because my filter sucks ass, I’m more prone to shut you out despite not giving
you a chance. You won’t get philosophical talking points from me, just curse
words and waves goodbye. I know this seems close-minded and that’s generally
considered a bad thing. I know my responsibility as a pundit is to research my
arguments and use my knowledge to shut down opposing talking points. But I
don’t have it in me to DESTROY anybody, at least not within the five-second
timeframe required to respond in a debate. The natural answer for me would be
to just stop writing poems and stories about politics, but…that’s just not
going to happen. I care too much.
If I refuse to engage in a debate with you, it’s nothing
personal and it’s not an indication of surrender. It’s because my filter for BS
can’t be bothered to work overtime for the Ben Shapiros, Charlie Kirks, and
Milo Yiannopouloses of the world. Even if I promised my filter a private jet,
healthcare benefits, and a vacation in Hawaii ,
I wouldn’t be able to convince it to work for me the way it does for the Cenk
Uygurs and Rachel Maddows of the world. In other words, you won’t see You Tube
videos with any of these titles…
“Garrison Kelly DESTROYS the establishment!”
“Garrison Kelly DESTROYS the corporations!”
“Garrison Kelly DESTROYS EVERYTHING IN SIGHT!
RAAAAAAAAAWR!!”
What is this, a fucking Godzilla movie? Does everything have
to be destroyed?
***BEAUTIFUL MONSTER***
My next assignment for this ongoing rewrite is chapter nine,
where Windham and Tarja walk through the forest together for more
thought-provoking conversations (they won’t need their weak-ass filters,
though). The day’s topic of choice: dreams and ambitions. Windham wants to be an artist of all genres
while Tarja wants to care for fuzzy animal babies. There’s even going to be a
scene where Tarja feeds walnuts to the squirrels and she offers Windham a carrot to give
to a rabbit. If you’re wondering where the hell all the action is, keep in mind
that Beautiful Monster is a drama first and a historical fantasy second. But if
it’s action you want…you’ll have to wait until the end of the chapter! No, not
that kind of action, you perv! They’re just friends! Jesus Christ, man!
***LYRICS OF THE DAY***
“I’m just a-wandering on the face of this earth meeting so
many people who are trying to be free. And while I’m traveling, I hear so many
words. Language barriers broken, now we’ve found the key. And if you want the
winds of change to blow around you and you’re the only other person to know,
please tell me. I’m just a singer in a rock n’ roll band. A thousand pictures
can be drawn from one word, only who is the artist? We’ve got to agree. A
thousand miles can lead so many ways. Just to know who is driving, what a help
it would be. And if you want this world of yours to turn around you and you can
see exactly what to do, don’t tell me. I’m just a singer in a rock and roll
band. Why can’t we understand? Riots by the people for the people who are only
destroying themselves. And if you see a frightened person who was frightened by
the people who are scorching this earth. Music is the traveler crossing our
world, meeting so many people, bridging the seas. I’m just a singer in a rock
n’ roll band. We’re all just singers in a rock n’ roll band.”

Yearly Muses
***DOMESTIC DIALOGUE OF THE DAY***
REINA: Garrison’s got a crush! Garrison’s got a crush!
JAMES: On who?
REINA: I’m not at liberty to say.
JAMES: You can tell me, Reina. You’re an American. It’s in
the constitution. It’s your right.
GARRISON: No, it isn’t! That’s extortion!
JAMES: Well, whoever it is you have a crush on, you probably
shouldn’t tell them that you like “Sickened” by Disturbed.
GARRISON: Those two things have nothing to do with each
other!
JAMES: Uh-huh, sure! You don’t relate to that song,
Garrison. It’s just your emo, angsty white boy music. Disturbed has nothing to
do with barbarians and wizards.
GARRISON: That’s not all I think about!
JAMES: Fake news!
GARRISON: Goddamn it, James!
***YEARLY MUSES***
I don’t normally open my blog entries with the
quote/dialogue of the day, but in order for the context to make sense, I had to
do that. This blog is about muses, or lovey-dovey goddesses who inspire
creativity. I was hesitant at first to do this blog because I didn’t want to
appear like a thirsty fuck-boy. But during that above conversation I had with
James and Reina, I learned not to be embarrassed by my own emotions. James and
Reina weren’t making fun of me for having a crush. They were proud of the fact
that I could feel those emotions to begin with. Or as I would say, “It’s a
natural function!” Hell, if you don’t believe me, listen to Mister Rogers talk
about how natural loving emotions are. Are you going to doubt Mister Rogers?
No? I didn’t fucking think so. But yes, it’s true, every year there’s a new
muse in my life. I don’t know why it’s a yearly thing, but as long as I’m being
inspired to be a better person creatively and emotionally, I won’t question it.
I’ve lived a long time, so I won’t go through every single year. I’ll settle
for a top five instead. Starting with…
***2018: SARAH-JANE REDMOND ***
Many of my readers have heard me talk about her before and
how her performance as Lucy Butler in an episode of Millennium called “A Room
with No View” has shook me to my core. I talk about Ms. Redmond a lot because
if it wasn’t for that performance, Beautiful Monster wouldn’t be possible.
Thank you for that haunting character! It’s true, though: Shelly Atwood (my
villain) and Lucy Butler (Millennium) have a lot in common. They’re femme
fatales who lead men into darkness. They use sex as a weapon and leave
psychological ghosts for their victims. If you’re wondering why I like
“Sickened” by Disturbed so much, it’s because I can picture Shelly and Lucy’s
victims listening to it on repeat after being free from their clutches. “That’s
enough of all your taunting. Seems I can’t remove you from my mind. Don’t you
know sometimes I wish they’d kill me for wanting you?” Goddamn, that’s some
powerful shit! I’d take twenty-four hours of that over “Love Is Blue” by Paul
Mauriat any day of the week, though the latter is a good song too. Thank you
for the creative fuel, Ms. Redmond! Now Beautiful Monster is about to be sliced
and diced by the iron chefs at Hollow Hills Books. I’m both excited and terrified
at the thought of receiving those future critiques! Maybe I should ask Lucy
Butler for a comforting hug. Oh dear god…
***2013: RONDA ROUSEY***
Ever since she became a then-undefeated UFC Bantamweight
Champion, Ronda Rousey set the motherfucking world on fire. Ass-beating after
ass-beating sent her opponents packing for higher grounds. Since I wrote a lot
of action-packed stories during this time, the ultra-tough warrior chick Ronda
had to be my muse. To this day, I don’t know if she was a direct inspiration
for Occupy Wrestling, but I wouldn’t doubt it if someone said it to me. Oh, and
she also inspired some angsty/lovey-dovey poetry that would eventually be
published in my first collection entitled Confessions of a Schizophrenic
Savage. I won’t say which poems, but trust me, my muse was there. Beautiful,
athletic, tough, and golden-hearted, Ronda was everything a man could ever
want. That’s why I rejoiced when her memoir came out in 2015. The Wrestling
Observer Newsletter ended up awarding Best Book of the Year to Daniel Bryan’s
“YES!” (which I’m equally happy for), but if I was voting, I would have given
the nod to “My Fight/Your Fight” by virtue of the graphic descriptions of
violence that “YES!” didn’t have. Today in 2018, she’s in the WWE and her next
match will be against Alexa Bliss at Summer Slam for Bliss’s Raw Women’s
Championship. And by the way, Raw is the name of the brand she’s on. I’m not
saying you have to be a raw woman in order to win it. Hehe!
***2006-2009: TARJA TURUNEN AND ANETTE OLZON***
In 2005, operatic singer Tarja Turunen was fired from
Nightwish for not getting along with her band mates. She was subsequently
replaced by rock singer Anette Olzon. Fans online have been going at each
other’s throats over who is the better vocalist, but I tried to encourage the
rabid wolves to be happy with both and to not take sides. They’re both
beautiful songstresses who put love and passion into their vocal work. They
both elevated Nightwish to the popularity it has today. And they both inspired
lovey-dovey essays and poems for me during my college days. To be honest, there
was nothing fun or exciting about college since I was constantly away from my
family and very few people wanted to be my friend. I filled the void by having
romantic visions of both Tarja and Anette, but I would never sully them with
crass sexual fantasies. Granted, the poems and essays I wrote sucked ass, but
at the time my ego was so massive that I didn’t want to admit it. Today in
2018, Tarja is enjoying a lucrative solo career while Anette is now part of a
band called The Dark Element. They both still make beautiful music and they’re
still beautiful muses that anybody can draw inspiration from.
***2004-2005: MOTOKO KUSANAGI***
Just like with Ronda Rousey after her, my affinity for tough
and brutal women was present with the main female character from Ghost in the
Shell: Stand Alone Complex. I still to this day have no idea why I enjoy the
presence of tough chicks, but back then, Motoko inspired a piece of fan fiction
called “The Heart of the Sun”. Because I was young and immature with regard to
how writing works, this fan fic was a self-insert job. Yep. I was the lead
character and with the help of Unreal Championship villains, I had a love/hate
feud with Motoko. Like the Tarja/Anette poetry afterwards, this fan fic story
sucked major ass. But again, my ego wouldn’t allow me to see the error of my
ways, mainly because I had someone on Deviant Art comment on how funny it was.
Then again, if a bunch of angry nerds told me it was dog shit, I would have
packed my bags and left DA in a heartbeat. The first step to being sort of good
is to suck major ass. Just because someone sucks at what they do, doesn’t mean
the whole world agrees with that opinion. Trust me, I know. So thank you, my
lovely Motoko, for giving me the creative fuel necessary to keep my young
career going full speed ahead. May you continue to kick ass and take names with
the boys at Section 9, all of whom I’m jealous of. Hehe!
***CONCLUSION***
Just to clarify, when I said top five, I didn’t mean five
entries, I meant five muses. Two women took up one entry, so my top five is
officially complete. All I have to say now is, I can’t wait to see who my muse
is going to be in 2019! I have a half year to pine over someone new, so let’s
see who it is already! I’m Garrison Kelly! Even when you feel like dying, keep
climbing the mountain!

Conforming to Society
***CONFORMING TO SOCIETY***
I can’t remember who exactly said it, but I read a Wikipedia
article where the lead singer of a punk band talked about the necessity of
conforming to society in order to fulfill responsibilities. In other words,
doing what you’re told will give you worth in the eyes of your boss even if you
don’t agree with your orders.
However, there’s a huge difference between doing what you’re
told to earn a paycheck and changing your mindset to contour to the boss’s
beliefs. When teenagers work at McDonald’s, they’re not doing it because
they’re zealots of fast food. They’re doing it because they want money for an
X-Box or a new car. Conformity takes place in the mind, not in the body. No
sane human being would ever bomb a Burger King or spray poisonous gas in a
Wendy’s in the righteous name of McDonald’s.
Money isn’t everything, but it is something. We all have to
have it in some form or another, whether we’re keeping a roof over our heads or
finding entertainment. Sometimes you have to do things for money that you never
thought possible. But does that mean you’re a puppet for whoever you work for?
No. Does it mean you have to give up on your original dreams? No.
If your boss does something morally corrupt, you could just
as easily look for another job behind his back. If you need time to work on
your dreams, wait until you get home. Even if you work seven days a week, you
can use at least a modicum of your free time to work on other projects. Yes,
you’ll be tired at the end of the day, but if you set aside time for yourself,
it can be achieved.
What you do in your private life and what you believe in
your own mind are nobody else’s business but your own. Your mind is a personal
haven where you can say or do whatever you want. You can have violent
fantasies, sexual fantasies, adventures, and other trains of thought without
invasion. Yes, people will try to invade your private sanctuary with insults
and abuse, which is why it’s important to maintain your individuality and
suppress thoughts of conforming to your haters. Being an individual is a skill,
but as long as you remember who you are and why you do what you do, it can be
done.
I’m currently reading another one of Andy Peloquin’s books
and it’s called “Child of the Night Guild”. The opening scenes depict a cruel
drill instructor named Master Velvet trying to force small children to obey him
at all times by starving them, beating them, and screaming at them. While the
children do bend to his will, I’ll bet you anything that somewhere in their
minds they’re thinking about kicking this guy in the nuts. He controls them by
changing their birth names to numbers, but other than lost memories, I still
wonder why these kids don’t just gang up on Master Velvet and beat him into
powder.
There’s no rule that says you have to like what you do for a
living or like who’s in charge. There’s also no rule that says you can’t use
your employment as a stepping stone for bigger and better things. You can work
at a convenience store, pay your bills, and set aside some money to publish
that next great novel of yours. It doesn’t happen right away and your soul will
feel crushed from time to time, but it can be done. Everyone tells you how hard
it is to be an artist, but nobody tells you how hard it is NOT to be an artist.
Think of all your favorite authors, actors, and musicians and what they had to
go through to get to where they are today. And yet, they managed to achieve
their dreams.
Putting on a grocery store apron doesn’t make you a zealot
any more than earning a paycheck makes you a conformist. Do what you need to do
to survive and then be yourself when you come back to your private life. If you
like wearing rock band T-shirts, put one on when you get home. If you like
watching Real Time with Bill Maher even though your boss likes watching The
O’Reilly Factor, watch Bill Maher’s show when you get home.
If you need help remembering who you are, surround yourself
with friends and family who believe in you. You might have to search far and
wide to find these people, but it’s worth it. It might even be as easy as doing
an internet search. Someone out there loves you for who you are. Not everybody
wants you to change into something you’re not. No, you don’t have to conform to
society in order to survive. Society isn’t always going to be your friend. Only
people who love and respect you can be part of your own society. Do what makes
you happy and be with people who will make you happy. You deserve the best,
always.
***DEMON AXE, CHAPTER 11***
I somehow have the feeling that there should be a transition
chapter between 10 and 11. But as it is, when chapter 10 ends with a bonfire
argument, chapter 11 begins with a heavy metal concert at another venue. Daniel
Mercer instantly forms a new band with members of I Am Death and Juice and they
miraculously know how to play Demon Axe songs. Monk robes, scary masks, and
crazy stage names aside, the new band won’t be called Demon Axe. It’ll be a
combination of those three bands: Demon Death Juice. Again, these things happen
instantaneously even though concerts sometimes take weeks or even months to
book in advance, not to mention hours of practice the bands have to go through
to get their songs right. Do we have time for rational solutions to the
transition problem? Could months pass without another terrorist attack from
Roger Zee? I need to sit on this one for a while before I write the damn thing.
***DARK FANTASY WARRIORS***
Uneven tits aside, I’d say that Raven Triscloud turned out
well. Now it’s time to draw a villain since a hero was featured in the last
picture. That’s how I’m going to pump out Dark Fantasy Warriors: hero, villain,
hero, villain, hero, villain. This time, we’ve got Carla Madder, the
razor-toothed, overweight madam from the Poison Tongue Tales 2 story “Shield
Me”. This woman could easily be the most frightening character I have and
that’s saying something considering most of my villains are psychotic
necrophiles who rape and murder without mercy.
***MIXED-MARTIAL ARTS QUOTE OF THE DAY***
“Love me or hate me, just debate me.”
-Ronda Rousey-
***POST-SCRIPT***
I just found out that Ronda Rousey lost to Amanda Nunes at
UFC 207 via TKO in under a minute. That makes me sad. It also makes me wonder
where she’ll go from here now that she lost two title matches in a row. The
last time she lost a UFC fight was when she dropped the Women’s Bantamweight
Championship against Holly Holm. She considered suicide after that match. After
her first stare down with Nunes, she needed to be consoled. If I could hug Ronda
right now, I would.

I Dream of Weird Shit
***I DREAM OF WEIRD SHIT***
I say all the time that dreams are a rich source of creative
fuel. They’re like Vitamin B12 for the schizophrenic mind (trust me, this is
real science; look it up). Last night’s visit to the subconscious theater was
one that qualified as cinematic wizardry. Or a psychotic cluster fuck, one of
those two. Either way, I’m going to harvest as much creative fuel as I can from
this once in a lifetime acid trip. Here’s how the dream went:
I started the dream by opening a newspaper and reading about
male-to-female transgender MMA fighter Fallon Fox confronting Ronda Rousey at
one of her press conferences…wielding a crossbow. That’s right, folks. A
crossbow. Not a shotgun. Not an AK-47. A crossbow. Nobody around me was asking
why Fallon Fox was holding a crossbow. They wondered what kind it was and how
many rounds it could carry. This was the one instance where it was okay to
complain about unfair advantages in a one-on-one situation. A crossbow, for
shit’s sake!
I put down the newspaper and get to work at my family-owned
toy store. My occupational dreams have come true; I get to work with toys! I
was setting up various Bionicle figures on the display table and even playing
with some of them. My videogame playing brother signed a package for a shipment
of Double Dragon games…for the PS4. A beat-‘em-up side-scroller from the 1980’s
is now on Playstation 4. Where the fuck have Jimmy and Billy Lee been this
whole time?! I missed those guys!
And then I actually start to play a copy of the game. Seeing
as how it’s on the newest generation of videogame consoles, the game is ten
times harder than its Regular Nintendo predecessors. The first level is a ski
resort crawling with anthropomorphic wolves carrying big fucking swords. The
creatures themselves aren’t so scary. It was when they grabbed Billy Lee and
bashed him over the head several times with the handles of their blades that I
decided to lower the difficulty and try again.
The ski resort level was the same, but this time I was
fighting baby dolls with milk bottles. The same health bar-draining beatdown
happens all over again. The dolls force feed me sleep-inducing milk while the
other dolls punch and kick me while I’m down. I throw the control and say, “I
don’t want to play anymore!”
I couldn’t play the videogame any further anyways, because
it was time for me to clock out from the toy store and spends some time with my
babysitter. This thirty-year-old man actually has a babysitter! And that
babysitter has some cute daughters who are about my age. I tell everybody how
beautiful they are and they get creeped out.
Instead of talking about beauty, we watch a TV show about
aliens disguised as people roaming the earth and preparing it for an invasion.
For the main character, we have a bald guy in a trench coat and a hat with his
face concealed as he goes around ratting on these aliens to the authorities.
Every time he successfully squeals on an alien, he gets a new identity under
the Witness Protection Program and continues roaming the earth to do his
detective work. He one time ratted out an entire restaurant because the aliens
were making racist jokes about Europeans. Aliens getting accused of xenophobia:
the irony could not be clearer.
After the end credits rolled, the closing logo featured a
guy getting hit by a car and flying through the air, getting hit by another car
and flying through the air, getting hit by a train and flying through the air
again, and then getting his nose chopped off by a helicopter’s propellers. In
the words of the pilot, “That’s one dead motherfucker!” For some reason, I
thought that closing logo was the most hilarious thing I’ve ever seen.
I woke up this afternoon at about two o’clock and I didn’t
want to do anything for the rest of the day. I was so exhausted from ongoing
sleep apnea issues that writing was impossible until now. I also didn’t feel
like watching WWE NXT or Smackdown this evening, instead electing to watch the
NXT Takeover special in Dallas
tomorrow night and Wrestlemania 32 on Sunday.
Losing an entire day of potential work to sleep apnea is
something that has plagued me throughout my whole career. Some days I’d have
energy, some days I didn’t. Today was the latter and I felt awful about it. Not
to worry, because I finally scheduled a sleep study which will take place on
June 8th, five days after my 31st birthday and three days
before seeing Slipknot and Marilyn Manson in Auburn. Chances are good I will
need an oxygen mask, which I won’t mind as long as it gives me the energy I
need in my day-to-day routine.
As of now, I have a short story to write for the WSS and a
chapter to edit the hell out of in Occupy Wrestling. Those things don’t just
write themselves. At least now I have some funky creative fuel to power me
through my short stories. We’ve got ears, say cheers!

"My Fight / Your Fight" by Ronda Rousey
BOOK TITLE: My Fight / Your Fight
AUTHOR: Ronda Rousey (with Maria Burns-Ortiz)
YEAR: 2015
GENRE: Nonfiction
SUBGENRE: MMA Memoir
GRADE: Pass
Ronda Rousey is world renowned for being an undefeated MMA fighter in her first twelve matches, a Women’s Bantamweight Champion, and the sole reason why women’s MMA is as respected as it is today. On an episode of TMZ in 2011, an interviewer asked UFC President Dana White when he was going to include a women’s division. His answer? “Never.” But the minute he saw Ronda Rousey generating buzz with her quick victories and trash talk, he never said never again. The rest is history. It’s a history that not just transformed a combat sport or women’s rights, but it changed the whole world. Anybody who says, “It’s impossible!” is a bold-faced liar. Just ask Ronda.
Getting to the top of the UFC’s mountain may seem like an open and shut case for Ronda given her fast victories in the cage. But make no mistake about it: the road to success was paved with blood, sweat, and tears. Lots and lots of tears. The obstacles thrown in front of her included the death of her father, dealing with losses at the Olympic Games, being broke and living in her car to, arguing with her strict judoka mother, and having rotten boyfriends who treated her like crap. This memoir is just one big David vs. Goliath battle where Ronda is David and the harshness of life itself is Goliath. Most people would allow Goliath to crush them underneath his leather sandals. Not Ronda. She fought back and threw Goliath on his big ass before wrenching his arm out of its socket. The toughness and passion of this woman is something that will inspire everybody who reads her memoir.
The other thing I thoroughly enjoyed about this book was the way Ronda described her opponents leading up to either a judo competition or an MMA fight. With the fiery, hateful, and often colorful language she uses to talk about people who stand in her way of success, you’d swear she was a mass murderer. Hell, there is even several occasions where she says in her head, “I’m going to fucking kill you, bitch!” This hellfire and brimstone attitude is actually an excellent motivator for her to win her matches in convincing fashion. Isn’t that right, Miesha Tate? In their second fight, Ronda beat the living shit out of Miesha for three straight rounds, not because Miesha was actually capable of outlasting her, but because Ronda wanted to tear her apart limb from limb and leave her a rotting corpse in the cage. All that fire, all of that venom, and all of that rage has lead Ronda to twelve victories in her MMA career, all but one of them ending in the first round. Yikes!
The final thing I would like to touch on is the amusing nicknames she gives her ex-boyfriends. It’s a creative way to avoid a slander lawsuit by avoiding their real names. Her first lover was named Dick Itty-Bitty and he was a lying, cheating son of a bitch. Another boyfriend she had was Creepy McSnappers, who took naked pictures of her and prompted her to kick the shit out of him. And then there was Norm, who was so average in every department and had a knack for being a control freak. The one flattering name she gave an ex-boyfriend was DPCG (Dog Park Cute Guy), an animal lover whose past with drugs and alcohol caught up to him one too many times. As of March 2016, the month I’m writing this review, she’s dating fellow UFC fighter Travis Browne. If she writes another memoir, what nickname will she give him? Big Ass Hawaiian? Sounds reasonable to me. Hehe!
Even if you’re not a fan of mixed-martial arts, the memoir stands alone as a tale of overcoming difficulties and being strong to keep going afterwards. Not only did Ronda Rousey rise from the ashes of a heartbreaking and nightmarish life, but she looks like goddess and smells like roses. Actually, there was one point where her Honda Accord smelled like dirty laundry and dog BO, but those things are badges of honor in a life where everything is earned through battle and blood. A passing grade for an A+ superstar like Ronda Rousey!

Self-Esteem
***SELF-ESTEEM***
When I watched George Carlin perform standup comedy for the last time in 2008, he ripped into people who believed in The Self-Esteem Movement. He argued that making all children feel special only makes them complacent and incompetent as students and workers. Because Carlin was a huge influence on me back then and still is today, I took his word as gospel and never questioned it. And then I saw another comedy routine he did back in the 1990’s where he slammed the environmental movement and liberals in general. Naturally, there’s a disagreement between us.
So as long as I’m learning to question what everyone says, what can be said about The Self-Esteem Movement? Yes, it’s important to have children who will grow up to be winners in life. I get that. Hard work, passion, and dedication are the keys to success. But what happens when they have a setback? Do they deserve to feel poorly about themselves afterwards? Such negative thoughts can take you to a dark place in life. Drugs, alcohol, sadness, suicide, self-harm, so many negative ways to cope with a heavy loss.
I’m currently reading Ronda Rousey’s “My Fight / Your Fight” memoir and there’s a lot to be said about her inner strength. Her judoka mother was always hard on her when she suffered a loss in a judo competition. Her mother also made Ronda compete through pain and injuries as if they’re completely ignorable. The proof is in the pudding: Ronda Rousey was undefeated for twelve MMA fights, she’s a former Women’s Bantamweight Champion, she’s wanted for movie roles, and she’s making a shit load of money.
But then there are the times in life when Ronda lost. Her most recent defeat was at the hands of Holly Holm, who kicked her in the head to earn a KO victory and the UFC Women’s Bantamweight Championship. Because she was conditioned to feel poorly after a loss, Ronda had suicidal thoughts as revealed in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres. I’m glad she never acted on those harmful thoughts, but what if she had? What if she didn’t have her UFC boyfriend Travis Browne to be her rock? What if her mother didn’t occasionally come to her rescue? Then what?
Is it possible to have a balance between the two extremes? Can children be told they’re special and be successful people at the same time? Consider this quote: “It’s easier to build up a child than to repair an adult.” Suffering losses and feeling bad about doesn’t “build character”. Remember that scene in Full Metal Jacket where Private Pyle shoots his sadistic drill instructor and then himself? That’s one instance where tough love goes wrong and it’s probably not an isolated incident.
Thinking highly of yourself has to account for something. If you don’t believe in your own abilities, what makes you think anybody else will? You can experience failure and still have the wherewithal to change your strategy and turn your life around.
The WSS group at Good Reads recently launched an e-magazine where the stories and poems of the contest winners would be featured. I have to admit, because I put a lot of pressure on myself to succeed, I initially felt sorry for myself because I hadn’t won a contest since 2014 when I entered “Luna the Moon Kitty”. I didn’t think this launch celebration had anything to do with me. And then I remembered that the WSS is still all about friendly competition and helping each other succeed. If my story didn’t get exposure on the e-magazine, it wouldn’t be the end of the world. There are other ways to get exposure and the WSS will still hold true to their principles of being a friendly community. God, I love those guys!
If you want to feel good about yourselves, you have my permission. I won’t give you grief for receiving a “participation trophy” after playing a game of little league baseball. The fact that you even want to play baseball and have the athleticism to do so should say a lot about you. I’m over 300 lbs., so there’s no way I’m becoming an athlete of any kind in the near future, which means no participation trophy. Sports are hard to play and hard to be good at, which is why I stay away from them and stick to what I’m good at: writing, drawing, and photography. We’ve got ears, say cheers!
***WEEKLY SHORT STORY CONTESTS AND COMPANY***
As part of the WSS’s newly launched e-magazine, they’re holding a monthly contest in addition to the weekly ones, so I figured, why not write another story? This one will be called “Medicine Man” and it goes like this:
CHARACTERS:
Tetra Engel, Thief
Jax Nightshade, Dark Paladin
Anya Kolobalos, Gangster
PROMPT CONFORMITY: Tetra wants to give his cancer-stricken sister a fresh start in life by healing her.
SYNOPSIS: Jax is the innovator of “maggot therapy” and charges excessively high prices to cure his patients. When Tetra’s sister develops breast cancer, instead of forking over his life savings, he goes out and attempts to steal the maggots from Jax. In addition to the so-called “Medicine Man”, Tetra also has to be weary of Anya, a spear-wielding gangster who wants to steal the maggots to make recreational drugs to sell at an even higher price. It’s a three-way battle on the rooftop of Jax’s satanic church. Who will survive?
***DARK FANTASY WARRIORS***
The next drawing I will turn out is of Caitlin Sparks, the rebellious swordswoman from “Sage Against the Machine”, which I wrote independently of the WSS contests. I’m trying to think of a cool costume for her, but nothing’s coming to mind just yet. Eh, I’ll figure it out eventually.
***POISON TONGUE TALES***
I’ve been busy editing the shit out of short stories and so far, so good. If I have my way, there will be one day where I edit six at a time just like I did today. The next to be bulldozed will be…
Guns, Drugs, and Misogyny
The Happy Slasher
Harvest Moon
Hell Yeah
I, Barbarian
If I Offer You My Soul (the one that coincidentally features a character named Ashley Marie)
***MOVIE DIALOGUE OF THE DAY***
DANTE: Here’s what I don’t understand about you: you have a driver’s license, you can operate a grownup vehicle, but after you drive a go-kart, you somehow feel better about yourself.
RANDAL: Look, it just centers me, okay? Kind of like the way jerking off in the men’s bathroom at work centers you.
DANTE: Hey, that was one time and it wasn’t to center me.
RANDAL: You’re right. It was to cum.
DANTE: So why did we have to drive all the way out here just so you can ride the go-karts?
RANDAL: Look, I don’t want to jerk off in the bathroom at work. What if I’m going and a customer comes in all sex nuts and retard strong? Next thing you know, I’m fighting him off while he tries to jam my dick in his mouth.
DANTE: The likeliest of scenarios.
RANDAL: Yeah, well, I don’t know about you, but cumming centers me.
DANTE: Man, that shit Lance said must have really bothered you.
RANDAL: Oh, fuck him. He’s an asshole. He always was. I’m sorry I let him bother me for even a minute. At least I got a go-kart trip out of it.
DANTE: Why do the go-karts help?
RANDAL: They just remind me of a better time in my life.
DANTE: Like when?
RANDAL: When we were young and the world was right there in front of us.
DANTE: You’re not that old.
RANDAL: I know, but sometimes I think the world left us behind a long time ago.
DANTE: You can do something about that.
RANDAL: I told you, I’m not jerking off in the men’s bathroom at Mooby’s.
DANTE: No, not that. Have you ever thought about leaving Mooby’s and changing your situation in life?
RANDAL: What’s the point? Besides, why do you give a shit? You’re leaving.

Anybody Can Lose One Time
***ANYBODY CAN LOSE ONE TIME***
The title of this journal is a line ripped from the movie “Million Dollar Baby”. The line is used by Morgan Freeman’s character to comfort a welterweight boxer who was thinking of quitting the sport after losing a bitter fight. It took a while, but the boxer eventually came around and continued his career under Morgan Freeman’s tutelage. It’s true for every aspect of life: anybody can lose one time.
To think you can go undefeated in whatever you’re doing for the rest of your life is unrealistic. Without failure, there is no success. Some failures hit harder than others, but none of them are incentives to quit. Failure comes in many forms and is a universal trait among any profession. Here are some examples:
Ronda Rousey was the most touted fighter in the UFC, not just as a female, not just as a bantamweight, but as a fighter in general. She was undefeated with twelve victories, many post-fight bonuses, and two championships under her belt. With the exception of her second bout with bitter rival Miesha Tate, all of her twelve victories were achieved in the first round, mostly by arm bar submission. And then came a feared striker named Holly Holm who kicked Ronda in the head and punched her repeatedly until she lost consciousness. That would mark the end of Ronda’s championship reign and the first loss of her career. Anybody can lose one time.
Rusev was the most dominant wrecking machine the WWE had ever seen in the year 2014. He went through the entire year without suffering a single pin fall or submission loss. In December of that year, he defeated Sheamus on the WWE Network for his first major championship: the United States Title. The Wrestling Observer Newsletter showed lots of love for Rusev in 2014 by giving him the Most Improved and Best Gimmick (Russian nationalist) awards. And then Rusev had to defend his championship against John Cena at Wrestlemania 31 in 2015. He lost. Badly. Rusev then went on to be part of a humiliating love square storyline that involved his manager Lana, Dolph Ziggler, and Summer Rae. Don’t feel too badly for him, though. He’s now part of a four-man international team of wrestlers called The League of Nations, which also includes Alberto Del Rio (Mexico), King Barrett (England), and Sheamus (Ireland). Anybody can lose one time.
I’m not going to bore you all with another sob story about how I got two-star ratings on Occupy Wrestling and American Darkness. I’d like to go further back in time than that. Before I became the accomplished independent author that I am today, I had to learn about the art of writing and the importance of reading at Western Washington University. I’ve had teachers at Olympic College beforehand praise my writing as the best they’d ever seen. Not the case at WWU. I thought I could blitz through all of my English classes with A’s and B’s forever. Well, by the time I graduated from that school, I did get a lot of A’s and B’s. But I also accumulated four C’s. C’s might not seem like a big deal to most people, but those four C’s hurt me badly and left me angry. My ego had taken a Holly Holm kick to the skull. Though I still get seen as a C student by my peers in today’s world, I know that my hard work will get me to the top one day. Anybody can lose one time.
But sometimes one loss isn’t enough. Sometimes you have to have five losses. Six. Seven. Twenty. Fifty. A hundred. Life is not about if you lose the big one; it’s about when. And when that time happens, what will you do? Will you continue to wallow in your sadness or will you pick yourself off the ground, dust yourself off, lock and load, and storm the gates of hell? In the end, it doesn’t matter how hard your failures hit or how close to the end of your life it feels. Your journey doesn’t end until you say it does. Don’t give up. Pick up your battleaxe and swing like a motherfucker. We’ve got ears, say cheers!
***POISON TONGUE TALES***
I just submitted a story called “Mastodon”, which marks the 49th story in the Poison Tongue Tales catalogue. If my math is correct, which it usually is, that means I have one more story to write before I hit my fifty story quota, thus ending the series and getting it ready for Marie Krepps’ lovely eyes and switchblade tongue. The 50th and final story will be called “Shadow-Pie”, an animal fantasy dedicated to the memory of an elderly black Australian Shepherd dog I used to have back in the mid-2000’s. Here’s the synopsis for that story:
CHARACTERS:
Lance Bradley, Pawl Bearer
Shadow, Elderly Dog Shaman
PROMPT CONFORMITY: N/A
SYNOPSIS: Lance takes the ashes of his dead father to Shadow in hopes she will spread them across the desert. In the middle of the ritual, the spirit of Lance’s father possesses Shadow’s mind and causes the dog to attack the forlorn son.
***DARK FANTASY WARRIORS***
The short story “Zombie” has certainly seen its fair share of gory goodness and foul language. What it needs now is some drawings of the main characters. Gail Reinhold already has a picture drawn since she used to be part of a novel called “Fireball Nightmare” and a videogame idea called “Final Fantasy Hardcore”. I’m not even going to bother with Deacon Simms since he’s too normal to be a Dark Fantasy Warrior. That just leaves one more character: combat drug zombie Mattie Dent, who used to be part of a longer short story called “Garden of Evil”. Mattie is muscular, defiant, rude, and butt ugly. Most importantly, she’s going to be a lot of fun to draw.
***POLITICAL QUOTE OF THE DAY***
“It is no more okay to ask a transgender person about their genitals than it is to ask Jimmy Carter if he’s circumcised, which by the way he is. Smooth as a boiled carrot!”
-John Oliver-
The title of this journal is a line ripped from the movie “Million Dollar Baby”.
Exploiting Death
***EXPLOITING DEATH***
Even though I wrote a blog months ago about marketing my wrestling novella to the right people, I just now thought of another example when it comes to wrestling vs. real life. Only in wrestling would it make sense to do horrible things for the sake of ratings. In other words, the Most Disgusting Promotional Tactic award only goes to wrestling and mixed-martial arts organizations, no where else, although the NFL had their fair share with the deflated balls scandal.
The year 2015 is almost over and in the WWE there was recently a late entry for the MDPT award. I don’t know just yet if it’s going to end up winning since the Wrestling Observer Newsletter awards don’t come out until late January, but it’s a strong contender. I’m talking of course about an ending segment on an episode of Monday Night Raw.
Charlotte and Paige were signing a contract in the middle of the ring so that their Divas Championship match can take place at Survivor Series. Charlotte is the daughter of Hall of Fame wrestler Ric Flair and the sister of deceased wrestler Reid Flair. When Charlotte spoke tearfully about her family’s fighting spirit, Paige said, “I guess your baby brother doesn’t have much fight left in him now, does he!” Charlotte went berserk and beat the shit out of Paige while backstage, Ric Flair was crying his eyes out.
That’s right, folks: for the third time in a whole decade, WWE has exploited the death of a fellow wrestler or personality, the first two times being Eddie Guerrero (2006) and Bill Moody aka Paul Bearer (2013). The thing that has a lot of people upset is that nobody asked Ric Flair if it was okay to do this segment. The creative team just went ahead with it, showing that being assholes was the only way the divas division would earn attention.
Going back to my Occupy Wrestling argument, only in pro-wrestling does exploiting death make any sense. It’s wrong as hell, but it makes sense nonetheless. It wouldn’t fly anywhere else. People are already pissed off at the Westboro Baptist Church for all of their “God Hates Fags” protests. Ronda Rousey has had it up to here with Twitter users talking shit about her dead father. Don’t get me started on the NYPD wearing shirts that say, “Breathe easy: don’t break the law” in light of the murder of Eric Garner, and yes, it was murder despite what any cop apologist says.
Exploiting death also leaves a sour taste when it comes to fictional TV shows, movies, and books. Want some examples? Here they are. Let’s do a Star Wars example.
DARTH VADER: Luke, you keep looking at the heavens for Obi-Wan Kenobi. He’s not in heaven. He’s down there…in HELL!!
How about NCIS?
HARPER DEARING: Gibbs, you have just as much chance of catching me as Caitlin Todd does of coming back to life.
Ouch! But it gets worse. How about Final Fantasy VII?
SEPHIROTH: Well, Cloud, I guess Aerith doesn’t have much fight left in her anymore, now does she!
Luke Skywalker, Leroy Gibbs, and Cloud Strife would either cry their eyes out, scream in rage, or beat the shit out of whoever said those things. Not only that, but the audience would have a sour taste in their mouths and would hit the power button at the drop of a hat. And yet, we continue to watch wrestling because there are other segments that are fun to watch.
With wrestling, it makes sense to watch it for things other than the worst parts. You don’t have that luxury with a movie like North Country, which is swarming with sexual harassment scenes. Another example would be a movie I have no desire to see, but know about anyways: Iron-Jawed Angels, where women in the 1920’s were jailed, beaten, force-fed, and raped in their struggle for the right to vote.
The Most Disgusting Promotional Tactic award serves the same purpose for wrestling and MMA that one and two-star reviews do for authors like me: they enforce accountability. However, they don’t always enforce humility, which is much different by comparison. At least when it happens to an author, there’s a slight chance he or she will go back and fix his mistakes, which is something I did with American Darkness and will do with Occupy Wrestling as both books hold a 2.75 star rating on Good Reads and Amazon. The WWE, on the other hand, has exploited death over the past ten years three different times.
I’ll be a wrestling fan no matter what horrible shit happens between the ropes. But if you’re an author with your own brand, you can’t always rely on people always being a fan of you if you exploit death. Sure, it will make your villains the ultimate assholes, but if they keep doing it over and over again like it’s their whole gimmick, then it’ll just frustrate the reader to where he or she won’t want to read anything by you again.
The one thing you can take away from this journal, if nothing else, is that villains were made to be hated, but it’s also okay if they’re liked every once and a while as well. And what do you know? The WWE has villainous wrestlers who are cheered (Kevin Owens) and heroic wrestlers who are booed (Roman Reigns). I just hope Kevin Owens doesn’t find out where The Ultimate Warrior is buried and piss on his grave. That would be bad for business. We’ve got ears, say cheers!
***POISON TONGUE TALES***
Would you believe it if I told you I only have three more short stories to write for Poison Tongue Tales before I meet my quota? I didn’t believe it at first either. I knew I had a lot of stories, but not 47. Number 48 will be one called “Wasteland” and it goes like this:
CHARACTERS:
Faye Blood, Human Monk
Marco Torres, Human Thug
Rook Maxwell, Human Dark Paladin
PROMPT CONFORMITY: N/A
SYNOPSIS: Faye has been wandering the desert wasteland for days and is exhausted from dehydration. Her monk teachings don’t allow her to attack other travelers to steal their water, but at this point, Faye has no other choice. When she sees Marco and Rook making out in their tent and wasting water by pouring it over each other for added effect, Faye figures that she’s justified in stealing their water. Her martial arts training will get her through almost any battle. Will it get her through this one if she’s caught?
***WRESTLING JOKE OF THE DAY***
Since NXT wrestlers Zack Ryder and Mojo Rawley like to call themselves The Hype Bros, then they probably won’t mind calling their tag team finishing move The Bro Job. Then Byron Saxton can make an awkward joke on commentary about how Zack and Mojo have an “in-your-face” style of wrestling.

Bury the Past
***BURY THE PAST***
In my college days, I used to talk candidly about my past like it was no big deal. I would write little essays of my most negative and emotionally draining experiences and post them online as if I was hotter shit than Tobias Wolff or Alison Bechdel, both authors masters of the memoir style. I even had aspirations of writing my own autobiography and talking about high school in Chehalis, living with my former step-dad Art, and being depressed at Western Washington University. Every negative experience I had in my life would bring me gold and silver, I thought to myself.
But then people would see these nonfiction postings and would want to know more. So they prodded me with questions like “What did he say?” and “What happened?” and anything else that would be considered nosy and detective-like. Talking about these experiences doesn’t bring me peace of any kind. It brings me sadness and heartache, so I try to avoid these conversations as much as possible. But then the nosy people would ask me why I posted my memoirs online whilst refusing to talk about it afterwards. I could never argue with that logic. I knew in my heart it was wrong, but I couldn’t disprove it. So please, if I don’t want to talk about the past, don’t make me. I keep those memories buried beneath the dirt forever, never to surface again.
I say these things not just as a warning to anybody digging into my past, but to anybody who wants to write memoirs themselves. If you publish something, people will be nosy about it and ask you about traumatic memories until the end of time. A prime example of a memoir gone bad is “My Fight/Your Fight” by UFC fighter Ronda Rousey. I haven’t read it yet, but I do know about it through Rousey’s Wikipedia profile. In the memoir, she talks about a time when she beat the shit out of her ex-boyfriend because he wanted to post revenge porn (nude photographs) of her online. Ever since then, domestic violence groups dropped the hammer down on Rousey while completely ignoring the cyber abuse her ex-boyfriend tried to commit, which is just as bad in my opinion as any physical beating.
Rousey has her own reasons why she wrote the memoir and none of her public backlash is her fault. But after hearing about that part in her book, it makes me want to read it more. Make no mistake about it, though: if there comes a time when the two of us talk online, neither of our pasts will be on the menu. Same thing goes for authors like Jaycee Dugard, Randy Blythe, and Amanda Knox: if I want to know their life stories, I’ll read their books and make no further comments other than to leave an online review.
Privacy is always a fuzzy gray area with the internet being as abundant as it is today. People love to share their lives online, but when the sharing becomes too much, their followers still want more. I personally enjoy my offline privacy. I keep my past buried beneath the earth, I refuse to write memoirs, and the only pieces of my life that I do share are clean photographs and occasional updates of events that might affect my artistic performance. Being an introvert and being a private person go hand in hand. When privacy is violated, the introvert becomes bitter at whoever violated it and rightfully so. So please, don’t force anybody to talk about something they don’t want to. Talking doesn’t bring peace for everyone, mostly just traumatic flashbacks and chilled blood.
***CREATIVE WORK***
A new week at the WSS is on the horizon, so expect another Poison Tongue Tale to come from that prompt as well as my independently written short story “Zombie”. The biggest update I have so far is for the Dark Fantasy Warrior drawings I’ve been doing. Up next is Rosie Moonbender, the antelope wizard from Unleash the Animal. She is the epitome of the “colorful, over-the-top violence” Edward Davies at the WSS likes to talk about when commenting on my short stories. Unleash the Animal was a bizarre story to say the least, which is what will make this picture of Rosie Moonbender all the more special.

WWE Night of Champions: Charlotte vs. Nikki Bella
MATCH: Charlotte vs. Nikki Bella for the latter’s Divas Championship, which she could have lost also by disqualification or count-out
PROMOTION: World Wrestling Entertainment
EVENT: Night of Champions
YEAR: 2015
RATING: TV-PG for violence
GRADE: Pass
For the longest time, the divas division of the WWE has been in murky waters. It has been plagued with short matches performed by smoking hot supermodels who fight more like cats than real wrestlers. If a WWE fan wanted to watch women’s wrestling that was actually entertaining, he or she had to get a subscription to the WWE Network and watch NXT. That all changed in a heartbeat one night. Almost a full year had passed since Nikki Bella won the Divas Championship against AJ Lee at Survivor Series in 2014 in a twenty-second disaster. Nikki, her twin sister Brie, and Alicia Fox all got together and danced in the middle of the ring thinking they had complete reign over the divas division.
And then Stephanie McMahon’s “Queendom” music played and out came the iron-fisted queen of WWE herself. She cut a promo about how female athletes all around the world were getting recognition for being just as good or even better than their male counterpart, whether it’s Ronda Rousey in the UFC or Carli Lloyd in soccer. Stephanie believed the WWE should be a part of that women’s revolution as well. So what did she do? She called three NXT divas up to the main roster: Charlotte, Becky Lynch, and Sasha Banks. Not just NXT divas, but badass battlers who could break a supermodel in half with just one punch.
And then the Divas Revolution was underway. The matches were longer, the women got better storylines, they got time in the ring to cut promos, and the matches were actually fun-to-watch wrestling competitions instead of just boring catfights. Despite this adrenaline shot to the heart of the divas division, there were still critics out there who thought pushing all of these women to the top was a waste of time. WWE Hall of Famer Greg “The Hammer” Valentine gave the most disgusting quote of the year when he said if he was in charge of the WWE, he would fire all of the divas and make them work in strip bars. I’m still waiting for Ronda Rousey to put this asshole in a shoulder lock and rip his goddamn arm out. If I have to wait forever, then damn it, I’ll wait forever.
At WWE Night of Champions in the year 2015, the critics would have duct tape on their mouths forever. Charlotte had just earned a chance to face Nikki Bella at this event for the latter’s Divas Championship. With her father Ric Flair and the NXT staff’s training, Charlotte could accomplish anything she wanted to. She was tall, lean, athletic, and she could beat the crap out of anybody put in front of her. She once out-wrestled Natalya for the vacant NXT Title. Natalya was trained in wrestling and jujitsu in the infamous Hart Dungeon, so getting a hard-fought victory over her in a classic back-and-forth war is saying something. Now Charlotte looks to do the same with Nikki Bella.
Before this match started, Nikki Bella was being written off by fans across the world as a supermodel with a middle school mentality who got an easy path to success by beating other girls just as “weak” as her. When the match actually started, she showed how much of a vicious wrestler she could be. Nikki’s entire game plan throughout the match was to not just attack Charlotte’s left leg, but also maul it, destroy it, and cripple it.
And damn, did Nikki deliver on that game plan. She suplexed Charlotte into the ropes and turnbuckles with the victim’s knee landing right on those hard structures. And while Charlotte was sitting on the ring apron hoping to recover, Nikki grabbed her injured leg and threw her to the concrete floor in a hard-hitting move known as the Dragon Screw. To add insult to injury, Nikki applied Ric Flair’s patented submission hold, the Figure Four Leg Lock, across the steel ring post with Charlotte’s legs bound and twisted in ways they’re not supposed to bend. And then the champion applied more pressure on the leg by twisting it backwards in a Single-Leg Boston Crab. And then more suplexes into the ropes and corners. And then a shoulder tackle to the back of the leg.
The relentless assault took a huge toll on Charlotte’s mobility. She was so badly in pain that she couldn’t even walk straight, let alone run off the ropes for a decent clothesline. My niece Reina watched this match with me and though she wasn’t in it, she still had aches and pains going through her own body while she was empathizing with Charlotte. If competing in this match cripples Charlotte, then the viewers at home and at the Houston, Texas arena would leave in wheelchairs. That’s how torturous this match looked on TV.
Which is why it’s so rewarding for the underdog Charlotte to come back from this endless pain and pull off a big move that will win her the Divas Championship. As Nikki dove off the top rope for another shoulder tackle, she got a spear tackle of her own right to the gut compliments of the challenger for her title. And then Charlotte did the unthinkable. Even with her severely battered left leg, she applied not only her father’s Figure Four Leg Lock to Nikki, but also bridged backwards to make it The Figure Eight. She held this position for as long as she painstakingly could and Nikki Bella eventually tapped out to lose the championship, ending her reign at 300-plus days.
Overcoming adversity is something women have had to do not just in sports, but in life in general. They had to take beatings just to earn the right to vote in America, they had to live as pariahs just to have the right to divorce their husbands, they’re being shot at for wanting feminine healthcare, and even today in this somewhat liberalized culture, women still have to fight for recognition in this world.
After seeing Charlotte win a hard-fought match for her first WWE Divas Championship in which the referee almost stopped it due to injury, I only have one thing left to say to Greg Valentine and everyone else who thinks that a woman’s place is in the kitchen. Would you really trust a red-hot warrior like Charlotte or Ronda Rousey with an iron skillet in one hand and a bread knife in the other? You want a woman to cook and clean for you? Okay. She can cook you with a flame thrower and clean the evidence of your existence off the floors so that the police don‘t suspect a thing. How does that sound?
Vikki Colt
NAME: Vikki Colt
AGE: 25
OCCUPATION: Singer
CANONS: Vina’s Slaves and Fireball Nightmare
I’ve always been fascinated with female singers, particularly those in the rock genre. In 2006, I had so much of a crush on Tarja Turunen that I bought every Nightwish album she was a part of. For Christmas one year, I got Rachael MacFarlane’s lounge CD, even though I’m not a fan of that kind of music. How about we continue the tradition of beautiful songstresses with the fictional variety, Vikki Colt. Vikki can not only do clean and dirty vocals interchangeably, but she looks smoking hot in a dress and gothic boots. You think there might be a line of men waiting outside her door with wedding rings in their hands? I’d like to think so.
In 2006, I wrote a rap metal musical called Vina’s Slaves, about a band of the same name trying to make a living in Bozeman, Montana. Vikki Colt was the female singer of that band and an occasional guitarist. Things weren’t going well enough for the band, so the leader, keyboard player and singer Chase Lugar, decided to get themselves popular by spreading politically liberal messages through their music.
It might have worked anywhere else, but not in fucking Bozeman, Montana, a state so red it might as well be covered in the band’s blood. The original guitarist Johnny De Morgan left the band under duress and became a born-again Christian. Charlie Moore went to jail after catching his girlfriend, Vikki, cheating on him with Chase. Vikki was raped by a gang of drunken marines and sent to a trauma center while the only remaining members of the band were Chase and the bass player Slick Hanover. Things eventually got better for the band, but not in Vikki’s presence, which means she was cast to the side this whole time.
Because I felt like she didn’t get enough attention in Vina’s Slaves, Vikki would have been resurrected in Fireball Nightmare, my most recent failure. Before it became a dud, I had one act completed and the second one in the works. Unfortunately for poor Vikki, she would have appeared in the third and I never made it that far. It’s a shame, really. She would have played an elfish heavy metal guitarist who tried to steal Ronan Seran away from his wife Makoto.
She could do it, too. When I drew her for the second time in eight years, she looked like an elf version of Maria Brink from In This Moment. Think about what kind of charisma Maria already has and multiply her hotness by a million. Vikki could have been something big. But like I said, Fireball Nightmare was yet another dud in this long line of stories that never made it.
But now that I think about it, was Vikki Colt used for anything more than just relationship fodder? Yes, she could sing and play the guitar with the best of them, but that doesn’t mean anything if her main role was to satisfy my musical goddess fantasies. If nothing else, that would make her a Mary-Sue. Either that, or she would be on an episode of Cheaters. She deserves better than that. If I’m going to make Vikki into a rock star, she has to be more about her music and less about being boy crazy. That doesn’t mean she can’t have sex appeal. It just means she won’t be in whatever story she’s a part of for pornographic reasons.
Maybe if Vikki’s sex appeal does shine through, she can go by the Neko Case and Ronda Rousey Rule, as I like to call it: if she doesn’t show it off at the beach, she won’t show it off anywhere else. Maybe Vikki can do a few bikini shoots, but that’s about it. Women wear bikinis all the time at the beach and none of them have been arrested for public indecency. In the same way that Ronda Rousey wants to be remembered for her fighting, Vikki Colt wants to be remembered for being a damn good musician and putting out metal album after metal album full of hardcore shit. If anybody comes up to Vikki on the streets and demands anything more from her, they’ll get a swift kick in the balls and be able to sing at a higher octave than her.
***LYRICS OF THE DAY***
“I don’t care about the story. I don’t care about the myth. I don’t care how you see my life; you haven’t witnessed it. Use fear as a weapon and pity as a whip. Convince everyone around that I’m a piece of shit.”

UFC: Ronda Rousey vs. Alexis Davis
MATCH: Ronda Rousey vs. Alexis Davis for the former’s Women’s Bantamweight Championship
PROMOTION: Ultimate Fighting Championship
EVENT: UFC 175: Weidman vs. Machida
YEAR: 2014
RATING: TV-14 for violence
GRADE: Pass
If you’re a UFC fan and you’re looking to make some quick money in Las Vegas, you would be a fool not to bet in favor of Ronda Rousey. In case you’ve been living under a rock for the past few years, here’s the deal with this badass chick. She’s undefeated in mixed-martial arts. She’s the current UFC Bantamweight Champion. Every fight she’s been in with the exception of one has ended in the first round. She’s earned a shit-load of awards from the MMA community. She’s an Olympic bronze medalist in judo (her main fighting style). She has movie deals with the Expendables and Fast and Furious franchises. She’s hotter than hell. She has so much going for her that her list of achievements would easily become a novel if I spouted them off to you.
Her opponent for UFC 175 isn’t anybody to sneeze at either. She is Alexis Davis. To earn her shot at Ronda, Alexis had to defeat three badass chicks in succession, which isn’t easy to do by any stretch of the imagination. Those three badass chicks are Rosi Sexton, Liz Carmouche, and Jessica Eye, all three of which have been in MMA for a long time and could destroy anybody in the blink of an eye. Granted, she beat those three via decision, but the argument will always be made that decision victories show how much endurance a fighter has. Alexis Davis will need a ton of endurance if she wants a victory of Ronda Rousey.
And now the field is set for what is sure to be an epic confrontation between two demon slayers. It is the co-main event of the evening, so the pressure on both ladies is especially high. The minute referee Yves Lavigne starts the match, Ronda and Alexis don’t waste any time in engaging with each other.
They throw punches, kicks, knees, and live to tell about all of those shots. And then out of nowhere comes the beginning of the end for Alexis Davis: a judo hip toss to the mat, which is not only a hard landing, but also a squashing technique since all 135 lbs. of Ronda Rousey’s body comes crashing down on Alexis Davis’ chest. With her arms trapped, Alexis has nothing to defend herself against the Armageddon-style rain of fists that come pouring down on her forehead. After ten stiff shots, Alexis’ arms go limp and that’s when Yves Lavigne stops the fight and awards Ronda a knockout victory.
There are two things about Ronda’s victory that are particularly amazing. One, after Yves Lavigne pulled Ronda off of Alexis, the latter was grappling with him thinking the match was still going on. That’s right, folks: Alexis was so punch drunk that she mistook a bald elderly referee for a smoking hot blond chick. And Alexis was really holding on tightly until Yves Lavigne explained to her over and over again that the match was over and she was knocked out.
And then of course, there’s the biggest elephant in the room when it comes to Ronda’s eventual Performance of the Night award: the judo queen won in only 16 seconds in the first round. Think of all the things one could do in 16 seconds of his or her life: make a cup of coffee, sign an autograph, eat a candy bar, just basic stuff. You know what Ronda Rousey did in 16 seconds? She beat the living hell out of another badass chick.
If you’ve read my review of a WWE match between Daniel Bryan and Sheamus at Wrestlemania 28, you would have seen that it got a failing grade due to the shortness of it all. And yet, Ronda Rousey vs. Alexis Davis in the UFC gets a passing grade even though it was only 16 seconds long. It seems hypocritical on the surface, but it’s not. In the WWE, we as an audience expect a long and dazzling battle complete with acrobatics and stiff shots.
In the UFC, if someone gets a fast victory over a legitimate fighter, it’s not scripted; it’s goddamn incredible. If Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader had a light saber fight that only lasted 16 seconds, we would all be disappointed because Star Wars is fictional and the writers have all the leeway in the world to create a war between those two. UFC is as real as it gets. It’s not pretty. It’s not dazzling. It’s just honest hardcore violence.
The phrase “don’t blink” has become used to many times in sports that it’s considered a cliché. And yet, for this match, it’s so true that you need Clockwork Orange eye bracers to keep from missing a single part of the match. And speaking of which, if Alex De Large watched this match while undergoing aversion therapy, the brutal violence would send his body into shock. No nausea, no shaking, no dizziness, just cardiac arrest.
Thank you, Ronda Rousey for putting on a judo clinic and giving the audience another reason to cheer for you. Thanks for doing it again at UFC 183 by defeating Cat Zingano in 14 seconds with a straight arm bar. If you’re going to watch a Ronda Rousey fight these days, make sure your watch has a second hand on it.

Cameron Gillespie
Is there really any way a 6’1” African-American woman can cut enough weight before a big MMA fight in order to conform to the flyweight division’s 125 lb. standard? Does it even matter that this same woman has pumpkin-sized muscles and the longest reach of any female fighter in history?
Every time Cameron Gillespie gets in the cage, she might as well be playing with a GI Joe in there. She’s only been defeated twice in her career and both of those losses were due to controversial split decisions. But those are just two matches. You want to know how many times Miss Gillespie won? Twenty, all of those victories being obtained either by KO or TKO. Bottom line: this woman is a killing machine and can make the bantamweight limit just as easily as she regularly makes the flyweight limit so miraculously. Hint, hint, wink, wink.
So why is it that I refuse to let this wrecking ball of a woman be a part of American Darkness 1 or 2? Because the story she was a part of didn’t do her justice at all. She was originally part of a short story where she only had one page worth of action and the actions she took were despicable enough to make her an unredeemable villain.
The story was called “It’s a Joke” and was supposed to be an MMA romance between struggling heavyweight fighter Finn Cosgrave and basically a Ronda Rousey parody named Zelda Lee. I thought I was being revolutionary by creating an MMA romance, because not many authors do it. Turns out there’s a reason for that: because there’s no love in war, only pain.
That pain came when Zelda Lee was forced into a fight with Cameron Gillespie, who towered over her like…well…a bell tower! Zelda landed a beautiful takedown and hand Cameron on her back in defensive mode. Zelda then put her hands on the mat to engage Cameron in a ground game. That’s where shit went south in a hurry.
Did you know there’s a rule against kicking somebody in the face while that person is in a kneeling position? If Zelda would have survived the kick to the face from Cameron, the New Orleans-born giant would have been either disqualified or deducted two points at least. Zelda didn’t survive. She was pronounced dead by the referee.
For whatever reason, I decided to have Cameron Gillespie show no remorse for her actions and not go to jail for this “accident”. Zelda Lee was the first person in MMA history to die during a fight and the sport looks even worse than it did before after Cameron Gillespie’s heinous behavior.
That’s not the road I want Cameron to go down. I see a lot of potential in this character and I want her to have the best role I could possibly give a jolly black giant like her. I know that if I include “It’s a Joke” in American Darkness 2, that book will get a low rating and few buys.
I’m not saying I want Cameron Gillespie to be a heroic warrior, but I also don’t want her to be a monster from the depths of hell. What kind of role could she have? A harsh trainer? A drill instructor? How about an incumbent world champion who’s deemed a villain because she’s held the title for so long? Maybe, just maybe she could be the world’s tallest voodoo priest. Can you imagine being that fucking huge and having magical powers to go with your awesome body? It’s overkill, but it’s an overkill people can easily accept.
Please accept Cameron Gillespie into your hearts and imaginations, ladies and gentlemen. Don’t let her become a stereotypical clerk at the DMV. Don’t let her be a stereotypical gangster woman either. I want this character to have substance, and that substance isn’t cocaine or heroin. And before you ask, no, it isn’t steroids either.

Nasal Science
Despite the title of this blog entry, it’s not about boogers and snot, so you can put the Kleenex away. It’s also not about masturbation, so that’s even more reason for you to stow away the tissues. It’s about people who have become so nosy toward authors and other celebrities that they’ve got it down to a science, hence the title Nasal Science. They ask the most ridiculous questions and put the “valuable information” on Wikipedia pages. For instance, someone actually got MMA champion Ronda Rousey to say that having sex before a fight is good for a female competitor since it increases their testosterone levels. I swear to god, that’s what’s on her Wikipedia biography right now. You know who else has a ridiculous Wikipedia entry? Former WWE diva Eve Torres. Somewhere in the personal information, it says that she’s afraid of clowns. Who gives a flying fuck?! And WWE superstar Daniel Bryan? Somewhere in his personal life section it says that he’s no longer a vegan because he developed an allergy to soy products. Oh, that’s so fascinating! I really needed to know about his allergies! That’s so fun! Look, I’m not saying that asking questions of celebrities is a bad thing. I’m just saying there’s such a thing as taking it to the extreme. Brock Lesnar and Jack White both have the right idea: if it’s not important, you don’t need to know about it. You don’t need to know The Great Khali’s penis size, you don’t need to know that Jacob Volkmann is a part-time back-snapper, and you REALLY don’t need to know how bad of a childhood Ivan Moody had. The latter of the three is what really disturbs me. People hear the songs “Remember Everything” and “The Devil’s Own” by Five Finger Death Punch, the band that Mr. Moody comes from, and they all of the sudden want to know all about his childhood. Are the lyrics not enough of an indication? “Slap on the wrist, smack in the face, the family tree gave me a name and nothing more!” What else do you want? Triggering a celebrity’s trauma is not fan service. Going back to Ronda Rousey for a moment, if you really want to know about her dead father, Google it. Don’t try to get her to open up to you. The last time that happened, she was in tears. We don’t like it when Ronda Rousey is in tears, except for when she just won a match. If you want to satisfy a minor curiosity, do it without making a science out of it. You don’t need a lab coat and scrubs. You’re just a geeky kid sitting in a computer chair. You want to know how you can pay fan service? Leave them the fuck alone!

Educational Fiction
We don’t need no education. We don’t need no thought control. No dark sarcasm in the classroom. Teacher, leave them kids alone. Hey! Teacher! Leave them kids alone! All in all, you’re just another brick in the wall. All in all, you’re just another brick in the wall. Sound familiar to you? It should. It was the perfect anthem for going to school and being miserable. Whether you were being bullied by the teachers, bullied by the kids, getting teenaged girls pregnant or being a pregnant teenager yourself, these separate phenomena have been and should be the subject of pretty much every educational fiction book on the library shelves. But to tell you the truth, the only educational fiction story I own is “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” and I have yet to read it. I’ve seen previews for the movie before, but I’ve yet to be properly introduced to it despite that. From what I’ve seen in the trailer, it does talk about bullying and friendship. Maybe even romance given that Emma Watson is in the movie. These may sound like inane topics when compared to world disasters, but they’re still important to talk about in some capacity. In fact, here’s a whole list of topics that all educational fiction novels should talk about:
I’m sure there are more topics that need to be addressed, but these are the main ones that concern me the most. If you have any further suggestions, feel free to post them on the message board. Until then, I have one thing more to say. We’ve got ears, say cheers!
***TELEVISION QUOTE OF THE DAY***
“Sexual harassment is just bullying with a boner.”
-Daniel Tosh from “Tosh.0”-
- Bullying. It’s been going on for way too long and despite all the deaths and heartache that has resulted from it, we’ve only been doing something about it since 2010. It should have never taken that long for us to realize that we need to treat each other with dignity and respect.
- Friendship. This goes hand-in-hand with bullying since friends and family are your support network for when you’re going through those awful things. What also needs to be discussed is the idea of friends never seeing each other again after high school or college is over. Then again, that’s what Facebook is for. I guess.
- Underage sex. When I went to school in the witch-hunting, Salem-esque town of Chehalis, Washington, the sex ed teachers taught us to wait until we were married to have sex after giving us a whole list of horrible STD’s to avoid by doing so. I’ve never heard so much dishonesty in my entire life. Then again, they have to have some way of keeping minors from fucking each other. Scare tactics are not the answer, though.
- Teen pregnancy. In addition to that long list of painful-sounding diseases, another consequence of teen sex is pregnancy. Teenaged times are about having fun and being a kid. You can’t do those things whilst taking care of a baby. It’s one of the reasons I’m pro-choice. The other one being that kids can be really fucking annoying at times.
- Drugs and alcohol. Promoting a straightedge lifestyle isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Hell, I’m straightedge myself, so I agree with drug education. But the whole “drugs are bad” approach can be downright ridiculous at times. It’s not enough to just say that drugs are bad and to use scare tactics. You have to teach these kids accountability and pride in their work.
- Mental illness. This one hits close to home since I’m autistic, schizophrenic, and quite possibly depressed. High school is not a good place to start hearing voices in your head or to have a sad attitude all the time. It interferes with your social life, your work, and it may encourage bullies to pay you more visits. The earlier mental diseases are detected and accounted for, the better off the student will be.
- The prom. I never got to go to the prom since I was too shy to ask anybody to come with me. I hated being told no and I still do. You want to know how much courage it took me to congratulate MMA fighter Ronda Rousey on Twitter for retaining her championship? All of it. Each and every last morsel of courage was used to post that message. If I’m that nervous around a high-profile celebrity, imagine what I’m like around regular people. Introverts like me quickly descend into our bubbles whenever danger approaches.
I’m sure there are more topics that need to be addressed, but these are the main ones that concern me the most. If you have any further suggestions, feel free to post them on the message board. Until then, I have one thing more to say. We’ve got ears, say cheers!

"The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins
Are you hungry for more? So are the characters in “The Hunger Games”, who live in a dystopian society ruled by arrogant politicians who make the younger members of their community compete in a death match of the same name as the book. If people know that having a bunch of teenagers killing each other is wrong, why don’t they just try to overthrow the government? They already tried that and it didn’t work out too well. In fact, not only are The Hunger Games around for the politicians’ sick and twisted entertainment, they’re punishment against their own people for trying to rebel against the system. It’s pretty safe to say that a band like Rage Against the Machine has better chance of playing their music in North Korea than they do in this dystopian hellhole. These teenagers have to make do with what they have, including the main character Katniss Everdeen. Katniss has several advantages in the Hunger Games. She’s an avid hunter, she’s excellent with a bow and arrow, she’s crafty, and she’s “dating” her male district counterpart Peeta, who also competes in the Hunger Games. If you think having a tactical advantage over everybody is a guaranteed victory, you’re dead wrong. Maybe even just plain dead if you get too cocky. The other “Tributes”, as the competitors are called, are muscular, nasty, ruthless, and they can snap necks with just their thumbs and forefingers if they so desired. As if competing with a bunch of beefed up sociopaths wasn’t bad enough, the environment in which these Tributes compete can be just as deadly. Firebombs thrown everywhere, wasps that make people go insane, poisonous berries that look delicious upon first glance, if there’s away to spread the contestants’ bloody crystals everywhere, it will be done. And the thing about “The Hunger Games”? It’s published by Scholastic despite the gory content. And why is that? Because somebody needs to tell the youngsters of today to question authority. That somebody will be Suzanne Collins, an excellent writer in her own way.
