Jim Cornette's Name Test
***JIM CORNETTE’S NAME TEST***
Another blog entry about wrestling? Well, not entirely,
though Jim Cornette is one of wrestling’s most recognizable personalities. This
blog has a little bit more of a universal appeal since it’s about character
names. Whether the genre is wrestling, fantasy, sci-fi, or even contemporary,
you want your characters to have good-sounding names. A guy named Michael
Hickenbottom doesn’t stand a chance in the limelight. But Shawn Michaels? Why,
that’s Hall of Fame-worthy.
Here’s how the name test works. You have two opponents, the
protagonist and the antagonist. When you say their names and stick the word
“versus” in between them, you want it to sound like it could be a big deal.
Examples from wrestling that could pass the name test include Ric Flair vs. The
Undertaker. Sounds exciting, doesn’t it? Makes you want to know more about this
conflict. Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat vs. “Macho Man” Randy Savage. That also
sounds exciting.
And like I said at the top of the journal, this logic could
apply to any two sets of people. Harry Potter vs. Voldemort sounds as magical
as its canon suggests. It makes you want to read the books or watch the movies,
so you’ll spend top dollar to know how that story ends. Lion-O vs. Mummra also
has a mystical aura to it, which makes sense coming from a cartoon called The
Thundercats. Goku vs. Freiza has a martial arts feel to it. Mario vs. Bowser
sounds like something that would happen in a comically mischievous world.
As much as I don’t want to toot my own horn, I’m going to
use examples from my own stories to show that I’m following Jim Cornette’s
advice to a fault. I’m currently writing a high school drama called Silent
Warrior, so there better be a positive name test result to back up such a hot
title. Scott George vs. Tom Simpson? Well, it doesn’t sound like much on the
surface, but if you shortened their names to just their family names, it sounds
like a Supreme Court case. George vs. Simpson? I’d say that has a Supreme Court
ring to it, which is funny because chapter eighteen features a criminal case
against Mr. George.
And then you have examples that not only fail the name test,
but fail them on an epic scale. The Undertaker sounds like a creepy enough name
on its own, but not when his opponent is named Stinky McFarts or Chilly
McFreeze. Ever wonder why you never saw a main event WWE match in the 1990’s
between Doink the Clown and Bastion Booger? Look at the names of those two
individuals and run them through the test. Epic fucking fail!
As much as I hate to admit it, one of my back-burner novel
ideas fails the name test as well. Booger the Clown vs. The Orc King. There’s
nothing wrong with The Orc King. In fact, it sounds rather intimidating. But
when you pair him up with a guy named Booger the Clown, you can see how the
story gets dragged down by guffaws of laughter. Then again, Booger is supposed
to be an ironic name to begin with considering the character is a depressed,
suicidal marine who moonlights as a birthday clown and can only feel happy when
he’s listening to violent gangster rap.
If you’re an author penning the next bestseller, take your
naming system seriously and make sure the final conflict doesn’t feature Nut
Sack McGee vs. Penis Breaker III. Of course, no self respecting author would
ever do that to his or her own product, but it’s worth pointing out anyways.
You want to know what sounds like a spellbinding feud? Reverend Jesse Custer
vs. God. A lot of whacky shit takes place in Preacher, including that same feud
I just mentioned. I don’t know much about the TV show, but I’ve read volumes
one through four of the graphic novels. It’s every bit as fucked up as the feud
sounds.
So that’s all I have for you today. Don’t forget to tip your
waitresses and leave online reviews for your favorite indy authors. I’m
Garrison Kelly and I’ll see you next time! But before I leave, now that we’re
on a wrestling-related topic, yes, I will do a blog entry about 2017’s Most
Disgusting Promotional Tactics as awarded by the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
My love for shocking the shit out of my audience hasn’t waned a bit. And
goddamn, we’ve had some good ones this year! Bye!
***LEGAL QUESTION***
For the next chapter of Silent Warrior, I’m planning on
having Scott George rushed to the hospital to be treated for anxiety and
malnutrition. I’m not sure if court cases actually work like this, but I was
thinking about having the trial broadcast to Scott’s room via satellite so that
he can at least know what the hell’s going on. Would a court actually do that or
do they just wait for the suspect to stand trial? You don’t have to be a member
of the bar association to answer this; you just have to know more about it than
I do.

Multiple Works-In-Progress
***MULTIPLE WORKS-IN-PROGRESS***
A few months ago, I saw a meme challenge on Face Book where
my author friends post the first few lines from three of their
works-in-progress. Judging from how many people were doing this challenge, it
made me wonder if authors really do like to write three different novels at
once (or more). By the time it became my turn to do the challenge, I confessed
that I wasn’t working on a novel of any kind, so I just posted the first lines
of three Poison Tongue Tales short stories. Seeing so many of my author friends
writing novels and getting them done in a timely fashion motivated me to start
working on Demon Axe, which I’m halfway done with.
I have Demon Axe planned out from beginning to end, so it’s
all a matter of finding the energy to get shit done. American Darkness 2 and
Poison Tongue Tales 2 are both anthologies with WSS contest entries as part of
the collections, so those are pretty much on a weekly basis. Prophecy is a
collection of poems, which will eventually amount to one-hundred since they’re
only one page long at best, but I only write poetry when I truly feel like it,
no sooner, no later. That leaves me with Demon Axe being the only true WIP I
write independently. If I was to do this Face Book meme challenge again, I
would only have one paragraph to post (or first seven lines, I forget which
one).
I’ve thought about tacking on another novel to work on. I
often run the scenarios of each novel idea through my head as if they’re actual
WIP’s. I for instance have a college romance idea called “Is This Weird?” where
I incorporate my strange sexual fetishes into the main relationship of the
story. I also have a pro-introvert high school drama called “The Silent
Warrior”, which will have to go through a complete overhaul in order to make
the main character less angry and more reasonable. If I was to work on a
secondary novel alongside Demon Axe, I would want it to be a contemporary drama
instead of a sci-fi, fantasy, or horror. I would want it to be the American
Darkness to Demon Axe’s Poison Tongue Tales. For some reason contemporary
dramas are easier to write.
That leaves me with a novel idea I’ve been thinking a lot
about lately. It’s inspired by the movie Clerks as well as my experiences with
going to rock concerts and being around drunken idiots. It’s called “Chicken
and Fries” and it goes like this:
CHARACTERS:
- Maxine Bennett, Concessions Clerk
- Belle Anthony, Slacker
- Evan Olson, Maxine’s Bouncer Boyfriend
- Sean Steiner, Straightedge Rocker
- Nameless Concertgoers
- Nameless Boss
SYNOPSIS: Maxine started working at the Brown River Arena in
order to save up for college. Since being hired, she has been yelled at,
sexually harassed, and assaulted by intoxicated customers. When Sean Steiner
and his touring band are the main attraction, beer and cigarettes are not for
sale, which upsets the already wild fans. Instead of taking another minute of
abuse, Maxine begins fighting back against the customers. On what she says is
her last day on the job, she burns customers with pizza, splashes soda against
them, dips their heads in the deep fryer, and even shoves chicken tenders down
a customer’s shorts and burns his crotch. Evan tries to calm Maxine down on
several occasions, but she’s unresponsive to his pleas. Things go from bad to worse
when Maxine notices Belle, who called in sick earlier that day, partying in the
audience and enjoying the music instead of taking her shift like she was
supposed to. At the end of this deliciously violent day, the only one with
common sense is Sean Steiner, who is the last customer to order chicken and
fries for dinner. Sean helps Maxine realize just how much trouble she’s in by
telling her a story of a time he smashed up a hotel room in an act of rage.
FUN FACT: The novel is called “Chicken and Fries” because
that’s the most common thing the patrons order, just like cigarettes were the
most common thing Clerks customers bought.
Nothing is permanent yet. I still don’t even know if writing
a second novel alongside Demon Axe is a good idea. Yes, other authors are
capable of doing it, but I’m not other authors. I’m not the kind of writer who
pours everything onto a page and because of that I only write when I’m mentally
and physically one-hundred percent. If I’m taking such a long time writing
Demon Axe, I’ll probably take just as long to write Chicken and Fries. This is
something I really have to think about before I dive into it. Until I make my
decision, I’d like to know everyone else’s take on the subject of working on
multiple novels at once. Is it a welcome side project or is it too much work at
once? We’ve got ears, say cheers!
***WEEKLY SHORT STORY CONTESTS AND COMPANY***
The new week started this past Wednesday and the theme is
appropriately going to be “Christmas Eve”. After today, I have three more days
to write my story before the submission deadline. I probably won’t do it
tomorrow since it’s going to be Christmas and I’d rather spend time with my
family. That leaves me with Monday or Tuesday to get shit done. My story will
be called “I Want Presents” and is based on a disturbing dream I once had.
Here’s the synopsis:
CHARACTERS:
1. Glenn
Robertson, Mental Patient
2. Kate
Spencer, Head Doctor
PROMPT CONFORMITY: Christmas is getting closer as Glenn’s
mental state worsens.
SYNOPSIS: After losing his parents in a plane crash, Glenn
regresses into childlike behavior and eventually has to be institutionalized.
It’s getting close Christmas and he refuses to say anything else but, “I want
presents.” Kate and her staff of nurses and doctors have tried everything in
their power to medicate Glenn into a normal state, but he seems to be getting
worse every day. In a last ditch effort to make progress, Kate assumes the
unlikely role of Glenn’s mother-figure and does something special for the
holidays.
***DARK FANTASY WARRIORS***
This will be the second drawing in a row that features a
character from my latest WSS entry “The Theomancer”. It will be of Yeti, a
gigantic mummy who serves as the gatekeeper between Krimson and Seven. Yeti is
really just a direct copy of the WCW wrestler of the same name, but he’s
different enough to avoid a lawsuit. Besides, Yeti gets a better push in “The
Theomancer” than he ever did in WCW. After all, it’s hard to push a gigantic
mummy when he’s best known for spooning Hulk Hogan and humping him from behind.
I’m not kidding, that actually happened. What Culture jokes about it all the
time.

Lisa Roberts
I’ve never been much of a John Wayne guy. I also never condoned the idea of cowboys shooting at Indians for no particular reason other than to be dicks. So why then would the western genre interest me enough to almost write a story about called Tombstone Technique? Because everything, and I do mean everything, can be made better…with magic! Cowboys shooting magic bullets at each other and Indians firing lightning arrows at their attackers. Bank robberies being done with shadowy skull staves and ten-pace shootouts being done with bone wands. My idea of a western story would be a sick hybrid of A Million Ways to Die in the West, Diablo II: Lord of Destruction, and Harry Potter.
That’s where Deputy Lisa Roberts comes in. You want to know where I got the name Lisa Roberts from? I stole it from NCIS: Los Angeles. It was a cover name used by Kensi Blye when she was going undercover as a warehouse thief. Actually, that’s an episode I’d rather forget, because it ends with Kensi getting punched in the jaw to the point where she can’t chew her food.
Unfortunately, I didn’t have the time or patience to expand Tombstone Technique beyond a genre hodgepodge and a roster of names. That means of course we have a lot of work to do when it comes to developing Lisa Roberts. And no, the word “development” has nothing to do with her breasts, you sick freak. It simply means we know nothing about her. She’s a clean slate and we need a piece of chalk to create art.
First and foremost, I want Lisa Roberts to be tough and sexy at the same time. I want her to rock a pair of jean shorts and to kick the balls of any man perverted enough to stare at her legs. I want her to have a revolver in one hand and a skull wand in the other. Whenever she has assholes on both sides of her, she can pump some lead into one side and shoot lightning bolts, bone spears, poison daggers, and fireballs on the other. But what if she got the crazy idea of imbuing her bullets with magical powers? Fireball bullets. Lightning bullets. Ice bullets. How about bullets that contain all three of those mystic elements? I have to fan myself off for a minute and it has nothing to do with the summer weather.
But of course, if I made Lisa Roberts into a male fantasy sex machine, she wouldn’t do well with the female members of my audience (unless they were lesbians, but chances are, they’re not). What kind of likeable qualities could we give this woman to make her stand out as a super heroine of the wild west? Toughness, as I’ve said earlier, will go a long way in giving her popularity. A silver tongue might also do wonders for her. A take-no-shit attitude will sure as hell give her some staying power. I’m liking Lisa already! She reminds me of Wonder Woman!
It’s funny, because just a few weeks ago at the WSS Contest and Company group on Good Reads, I confessed to everybody that I didn’t know how to make likeable characters, that I just threw everything together willy-nilly. I’m still doing that with Lisa Roberts. The difference is, if I want Lisa to become the fully-developed badass she’s destined to be, I can’t put her in a short story contest entry. She has to go through a whole journey that can only be told within a full-length novel. And unlike most characters in my novels, Lisa Roberts will live to see the next novel, should she be a popular hit with my audience. She’s a survivor, damn it! Put her in the move “The Purge” and she’ll still come out smelling like roses and gunpowder!

"Flight" by Sherman Alexie
For those of us who grew up with a difficult past, it’s easy to get lost in the anger and that anger can often beget violence. Such is the case for half-Irish, half-Indian teenager known only as Zits (because of his poor complexion). His Indian father left him when he was just a baby and his mother died of cancer when Zits was only six years old. Ever since then, Zits has been bounced around from foster home to foster home with nothing but rage boiling inside of him. The burning hot anger gets too be too much and with the guidance of another troubled youth only named Justice, Zits comes within moments of shooting up a bank full of strangers. Before he can actually pull the trigger, the Indian youngster gets sent back to various moments in time in which the people he inhabits had to make violent choices as well, from nineteenth century Indian warriors to corrupt FBI agents. In each of these moments, Sherman Alexie is doing what a book critic once said he did all along, which was break our hearts and make us laugh at the same time. The laughter comes from the pop culture references and snappy dialogue, all of which coming from the narrative mind of Zits. The heartbreak takes the form of various deaths and tragedies that the people Zits wakes up as had to endure. Killing another human being isn’t nearly as easy as our angry consciences make it out to be. Yes, we can be angry enough to punch someone out or shoot someone into oblivion, but after the fact, it becomes hard to live with. Committing violent acts isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be. It’s not relieving. It’s not therapeutic. It’s hurtful. Pain begets pain. Anger begets more anger. Blood doesn’t wash away no matter how much dish soap you use to scrub your hands with. Only a cold-blooded mercenary could ever live with himself after committing murder. Zits is not a cold-blooded mercenary. He’s just a kid who was dealt a crappy hand. And now he’s imagining dealing a crappy hand to complete strangers in return. The blood, the tears, the heartache, is it all worth it? If it’s still worth it to you after you read Flight by Sherman Alexie, you missed the point entirely. Life isn’t an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie. It’s not even a Jason Statham movie. It’s a cycle of violence that tears away at us until there’s nothing left. Think about that for a minute, if you have the stomach for it.

Evil Character, Nice Guy
My best friend Zero Urrea introduced me to a site called TV Tropes and on this site I learned about the theme of the “Evil Character, Nice Guy”. You know what that means? It means that just because George Carlin joked about the possibility of Porky Pig raping Elmer Fudd, doesn’t mean he would actually go out and rape somebody himself. Just because Daniel Bryan emotionally abused AJ Lee in the WWE, doesn’t mean he’s an even worse lover to his real life girlfriend Brie Bella. Just because Derrick Green growls like a monster when he sings Sepultura songs, doesn’t mean he’s a grunting monster in real life. George Carlin, Daniel Bryan, and Derrick Green all have one thing in common: at one point they were considered to be villainous characters, but in real life, they are the friendliest people you’ll ever meet. Before his death in 2008 (rest in peace), George Carlin was a loving family man who had a whirlwind romance with his first and second wives Brenda and Sally respectively. He even had a daughter named Kelly, who to this day celebrates her father’s legacy by promoting his comedy whenever she gets the chance. As far as Daniel Bryan goes, he went through his entire wrestling career praised for being a nice guy in the locker room. In fact, Jim Cornette, Bryan’s former ROH boss, came to his defense when Bryan was first fired from WWE. Mr. Cornette said that Bryan was a “model employee, a pleasure to be around, an all-around nice guy, very respectful to the veterans”, things like that, which are all good reasons to keep somebody as an employee as far as I’m concerned. Derrick Green? Well, he’s part of an unfortunate stereotype that heavy metal fans and singers find themselves in just because they’re associated with aggressive and angry music. These stereotypes include, but are not limited to, being evil, being a devil worshipper, hating the world, being depressed, and cutting themselves. Derrick Green may have monstrous vocals when he sings with Sepultura, but he is far from evil. I’ve never met the guy myself, but I’m putting it on my bucket list. He already has a reputation for being an animal lover, so he gets brownie points for that. So I guess I should get straight to the point when it comes to the message of this blog entry, and that is to never judge somebody by what they do on TV. By the same token, don’t judge an author by the transgressive nature of his stories. Stephen King is a master of gory literature as everybody knows, but he’s never actually committed murder before. Imagine that: you can actually be a gory writer and a nice guy at the same time! Who knew?!
